I know many TFSers probably haven't heard of "Second Life" yet, but I'm pretty sure some of you will definitely find it interesting! And really soon, I bet a lot of people are gonna know about it. It used to be something only techies really knew about but it's suddenly exploding in popularity and suddenly they reached 1 million members, and very soon they'll be at 2 million members.
"Second Life" (or, "The Sims Online" version for teens) looks similar to the game "The Sims", but is really more like a virtual online community (like TFS) but with 3D avatars in a 3D world. (And BTW - it's FREE, and I don't work for "Second Life" promotions or anything, I'm just excited about it!)
I think some of you are going to get excited about it too, because in Second Life, the fashion industry is HUGE! It's very important to people how their little avatar looks. Everyone wants it to be a unique reflection of their personality. And they are willing to pay others to design the perfect outfits, hair, makeup, etc. And the most exciting part for someone working in the fashion industry? You get paid in "Linden Dollars", and those can be exchanged for US dollars!! Some people actually can make a real-life living off of selling virtual things in Second Life! Can you imagine that?
If you are already using computer software to design clothing (that you are planning to actually have created in real life) you are basically a hop skip and a jump away from being able to design virtual clothes that people will pay ACTUAL money for. (The best part is, no materials or shipping etc costs for you!)
I think this is an incredible thing, I personally can't design clothing on the computer, but it's still a lot of fun to have this other world of fashion to go to too. It has its own trends (for example, hair: not so much the style but the type. It's out of fashion there to have "default type" hair, you have to have "prim" hair...which people sell. But not only that, but now there is an even more recent/hot type of hair to have, "flexi-prim" hair. Everyone goes out and buys at least one "flexi-prim" hairstyle. But most people want more than one hairstyle too! They don't buy it from the "second life" company, but actually from people just like themselves, but who learned how to design this stuff.)
I've only "played" this thing for less than two weeks, but I'm just so interested in the possibilities. Ladies and gentlemen of the fashion industry, I am dying to know what you think of this new virtual world of fashion... are you as excited as me? Or do you think it's all too silly?
