Make use of old fashion magazine covers

^ you could make a collage and then enter it in the scholastic arts and writing scholarships competition for 2008. they have a 'mixed media' category, which would be like magazine collages. that's what i am going to do  why not?

^yeah, but then i dont think i would ever get it back... :(

i was just cutting out the words, images and everything else i liked out of the magazine and putting it in a shoe box.

Write letters like ransom notes out of the words. Mail them to your friends.

Haha, I have done that as well. It's pretty giving to go through them from time to time.

This is a bit different to what I think you guys are talking about but basically I'm doing an art course right now and I'm using fashion magazines as inspiration for my project called 'the fake and superficial versus the real'. Anyway, I've been painting from fashion editorials and have been making a kind of 'scrap book' where I collect images that I find interesting. I can't bring myself to cut up Vogue though! Loads of artists are doing this kind of thing right now. You should look at artists like Chantal Joffe, Karen Kilimnik and Stella Vine (she did lots of paintings of Kate Moss) if you're interested in that kind of thing. Also Amie Dicke (I think that's how you spell it). Magazines are a great source to use for artists because they're an endless catalogue of images of women which is what I find interesting.

Also, I've been using a method where I cut out a magazine image, put pure turpentine on the back of it, lay it down onto a piece of paper on a hard surface then rub the back of the image quite hard (I sometimes just use a pen or a paintbrush). You get a faded image of the picture you used and I think it looks really effective in a rough, ghostly kind of way.

^^ If I were you, I wouldn't be able to say goodbye to my Vogue magazines either though...
I just make collages and stick them everywhere.

you could probabbly get more ideas if you go to a craft store

I'm going to start making things out of late 60's/early 70's Playboy centerfolds. Wish me luck!

what i've been doing since i was younger was just cutting out the words, images and everything else i liked out of the magazine and putting it in a shoe box. now i have three very large shoe boxes filled with magazine scraps and i have no idea what to do with them :ninja:.

I love this thread! I am so bad at keeping my room clean so I can't keep too many mags around. I usually won't rip anything newer than 3 months though. But yeah, I go through each page like someone said and tear out everything I like. Even if it's not the whole composition of the page but just a pattern or color or texture I like. Then I decoupage and collage when I have spare time (like in summer).

I've done photo boxes that I store things in besides photos and I painted the lids all silver.

Also I bought a bunch of cheap plastic thick bangles at Claire's and I used long thin strips of magazine to decoupage them. Some with only b&w text strips, others with only technicolor bright parts of photos. They look cool and they are so cheap and people always compliment me on them. Spray it with some sealant though so wearing them doesnt make the paper/mod podge wear off...
