Vogue China December 2021 : Karen, Suzi, Tianna & Tindi by Lei Wei Swee

Gladly admitting that Maggie's is creatively ambitious. And I’m also glad to have been (somewhat) wrong about her leading VC. However, all her creative input are on the half-baked side: Good concepts— just not successfully executed. She clearly wears her references on her sleeve; from The Face and Italian Vogue, to this very much inspired by Avedon’s 1960s American Vogue. But it’s all student-level in execution unfortunately, down to the terrible lighting in some shots— like the cover select.

Completely agree, however to your point, she is far exceeding my expectations. I'm guessing she has put together a great creative team to guide her. I'm excited for this new direction, tbh. This is gorgeous.

Weird, elusive, surreal: a story is being told, but the narrative escapes reason. There is something very cinematic about the editorial, some shots feel like stills from a movie. Smartly chosen, insanely good cast. Even the obvious flaws in the execution feel right, as though they added to the thoroughly planned chaos. This thinking is so outside the box, I don't believe there's any. Box, I mean. Thinking, there's an inordinate amount. This is just brilliant. And then, of course, TINDI :woot:!

Tindi and Tianna's covers are the best for me. Shot of all of them sitting at dinner is pretty fabulous though.

@Horizontina, sweetie, WHERE have you been (hiding) all this time?!!

I'm enjoying tremendously by reading your comments which, aside from being (extremely) witty and (just a bit! :D) cheeky, in 99% of the time are SPOT ON!

And I thank you for that. :flower:

It's giving me Farneti before his coloring book era. I LOVE it! Tindi Mar is always a pleasure to see.

I am overwhelmed by your words, @Zorka . It is me that must thank you for creating the space and providing the resources to keep the conversation going. It is a pleasure and an honor for me to join the discussion with such smart, insightful connoisseurs as you, and all the other legendary voices on TFS, and this forum in particular. After a decade as a guest and just a month as a member, I feel at home already ^_^.

The cover story is flawless & appropriate with the Holiday theme.

it comes across very strong but then it feels like something is missing! I don’t know exactly what, maybe it’s the lightning as @Phuel pointed out.
nevertheless, it’s a good editorial.

the cover could also be better. bothers me a little bit the lack of cohesion with the styling.

Okay this is quite fabulous, it would have been even more perfect if a Chinese model was also part of the main ensemble. Nonetheless, the group and solo shots are both really strong.

Seeing Demna's Balencaiga couture in all these editorials has also given me a newfound appreciation for the collection. It photographs so well and works wonderfully here, contrasted against the intricate backgrounds.

The coverstory “Be Our Guest, Raise A Glass” is surprisingly solid. It’s not quite there in terms of the level of creative production and masterful execution that was once the standard of Franca’s Vogue/Fabien’s Interview?Carine’s Vogue— and far from its inspiration of Avedon&Polly x Veruschka on their Grand Journey brand of fashion magic. But it shows potential, and in these tepid days, I’ll gladly take it. Even the annoying fishbowl lens lends a quirky, accidental tourist vibe to the settings. “You Shall Go To The Ball” is the other original fashion story that continues the streak of solid work. Not great, but solid. You know, I’m glad to have been (hopefully…) wrong about her— she’s slowly but surely proving to be capable of showcasing classic Vogue traditions of high standards, and still maintaining a sense of freshness, relevance, and in developing a strong fashion identity for Vogue China (and supporting their own talents). Hopefully the only way is up from now on for Vogue China.
