Vogue China January 2023 : Fei Fei Sun by Nick Yang

That's crazy...

The past CHANEL ad model Chiharu Okunugi still doesn't have a decent only-girl cover on Vogue Japan. She has a single shoot separate from the group cover only.

But VOGUE JAPAN is quite generous to Nepo Babies, as it gave the cover girl quota to Cocomi, daughter of a fmous Japanse actor.

To conclude, VJ is never supportive to Japanese models AT ALL.

Vogue Korea features a lot of Korean models and entertainers. Perhaps less lately since they have a huge passion for idols in Korea but nevertheless in their history they have lots and lots of Korean models on their covers. They also love to feature international models too which is way more blatant with Vogue Japan.

Back then, even with Vogue China and Vogue India when they both launched it was more than a trend, it was necessary to feature international top models, like the big 4 Vogue, because it used to represent a standard for quality and that top photographers were shooting these top international models. Over the years Vogue China, Vogue Korea, Vogue India helped support way more their own models, but Vogue Japan, no. They may have in their entire history perhaps less than 6 Japanese models on their covers which is crazyyyy.

Ultimate Meisel girl. Is the type of beauty that Steven loves to photograph. Seems after 2016 models stop to look like this Meisel type of girl. Also it's so crazy that we are talking now comebacks from the 2010s girls! Makes me feel older.

Fei Fei is stunning that's a face you cant replicate and she's such a class act I love this comeback for her 10/10

This is really good (still superior than what other editions put out), but when you compare it with this month's Liu Wen feature, c'mon.... FEI FEI DESERVES BETTER! Her "comeback" should be grander.

Starting the year off strong! It looks like cover from Angelica's early years. I should hate the referentialism but given who's in charge of this magazine I'll take it.

China's patriotism definitely extends to their models and they've done it since inception so it's almost the norm to see their greats booking covers.

@Phuel someone on here explained to me in my early tFS days that Japanese magazines fall into sects of sorts. There are the local magazines and readers expect those to cover Japanese subjects, then there are the Western mags that include Vogue Japan - here they prefer to see Western faces or rather, a Western pov/opinion of fashion at large. Popeye for instance is a local fashion magazine for teen boys so the majority of the covers and editorials feature Japanese models. Now you can unpack this in 1001 different ways but I think ultimately the Japanese approach fashion entirely different to the rest of us. They've also covered fashion for many years so they way they do media is institutionalised to a degree. Sadly that also mean that Japanese models such as Chiharu Okunugi and Tao Okamoto could never expect the ride or die support Vogue China gave to Du Juan and Liu Wen.

Anyway I'm sure all of this changed after COVID where most countries started looking inwards in a larger sense, but I highly doubt that the nationalised directive forced onto Vogue Japan by Conde Nast global will work. They're a staunch people.

EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!

May I know if you are Japanese?
I am always curious what sort of local high end fashion magazines are the most popular ones in Japan?
Some told me SPUR, MARISOL, etc.
But I don't know which ones are the most well-endited and popular? Are they huge different than Vogue Japan?

Oh no no, I'm not Japanese at at all.
Just your average magazine lover like the rest on here.
Haven't seen SPUR for ages, I mainly focus on their men's magazines. From my limited knowledge their edgier franchise magazines such as ID/Numero are far better than Vogue Japan etc. Vogue Japan right now is really just say 4/5 editorials, the rest of the magazine is filled with crass product heavy placement. You're better off with ID Japan.

@Benn98: Yes, I remember the suggested reasoning for why VJ not casting Japanese models.

Still, this gives the impression of those lingering accusations of discrimination are alive and kicking— and amongst the Japanese of other Japanese. (…No different than a segment of the Western White population that drags their own and desperately seeking the approval and association of the Black culture/population.)

Vogue as a brand is beyond mere fashion publication in media/culture/society— as much as it’s become a collective bane of TFS members. It has come to represent the "ideal" of high fashion in the public eye (unfortunately LOL). And that the Vogue Japan/Nippon of the past— as good as it was, seemed to have neglected to showcase Japanese models, and instead, always been dominated by White presence, really just reinforced Angelica’s experience that when Vogue China started, that the institutionalized mentality that only Western sensibilities mattered, and for those to associate with anything Chinese (or Asian), was somehow inferior, beneath them. Of which, I would even agree with of the industry in past eras when it came to porfessional creativity, since China’s take on high fashion was in its infancy back in the mid-2000s— but absolutely not so much in this current era. Looking at the kind of creative and professional standards of production that the likes of China’s and Korea’s Vogue/ELLE/Bazaar/GQ/Esquire etc etc, in comparison to the West’s, it’s like comparing a hardworking, experienced and skilled pro-talent to the lazy, sloppy meanderings of an entitled high school project that’s weened on Rupaul’s Drag Race and any given Housewives Of/Keeping Up With Kardashian slop. When the reality is that the Asian talents are just as new and young as the West’s are but way way way more creatively and technically superior, it’s rather revealing how standards have been lowered to the lowest in the West…

Wow took me a while to realize this was Ming Xi. Her face looks...different.

Even though it is a very different mood and approach, Fei Fei's editorial reminds me of her Harper's Bazaar Spain edit from 2015 with Luss and Moody. There's 3-4 different narratives in the one edit, when they probably could have picked one and flesh it out OR did an entire issue devoted to Fei Fei and have each as their own edit.

I still enjoy it regardless. There's a slick drama to it that doesn't go into the area of camp. Like Luis Sanchis' or Sean Ellis' work. And I love "Every Now & Then". Slight Serge Luten's for Shiseido feel to it.

I’m loving this issue!!! Dark and somber through and through!!
