Vogue España July 2025 : Aitana by Pablo Saez

Such a bad cover : from this awful 80's dress to her expression to the background or the shoes and the absence of layout doesn't help. It doesn't feel festive at all, it feels sad, like she's tired or it's a behind-the-scenes shot but not a cover worthy picture. The pose isn't flattering either. A smile would have lift things a bit.

When I saw the title I thought it would be that footballer 🙈

The cover has the feeling of being a little unfinished - like it should be the third image accompanying her interview inside.

It's very 'modern' to have a cover shot where people's hands or feet are cut off in the frame.

My memory tells me that magazine covers used to be perfectly framed - in the days when film wasn't to be wasted, a cover set-up would be carefully arranged in front of the camera, and then when technology allowed, magazines would go as far as to cut-and-paste people's heads onto different shots of their bodies in order to make the cover shot 'fit'.

Randomly looking back at Vogue covers from 2010, I see that the pointy ends of elbows were often getting cut off - so many elbows! - but generally a cover shot looked recognisable as a deliberately-created image for the front of the magazine.

These days, digital photography gives you the opportunity to take a thousand shots and then pick the very best ones, but it often doesn't feel like we're getting the best. The ease at which you can now take photos seems accompanied by an overall lowering of effort regarding the rest of the process - the set-up, the storyline, the editing, the cropping etc.

I'm sure there are some who see this as progress - refusing to 'conform to the confines' of the traditional cover. And lack of budget is a big thing. Yet there have been plenty of magazines throughout the years who had limited resources, but still managed to produce memorable content, thanks to imagination, ingenuity and sheer desire. Although you can't push boundaries these days, those people wouldn't be in their jobs for long, if working right now.

The digital copy is showing 180 pages, the inside front cover campaign is Omega Watches.

At the front of the issue, it's straight into a jewellery editorial, COOL GIRL, shot by Francesc Planes, also CHICA DE HOY EN DIA, shot by Silvia Retana, promoting Dior's D-Journey bag.

In the main editorial section, there's the cover story, then a long sportswear shoot, EQUIP TITULAR, shot by David Portela, styled by Ana Tovar, with Jill Kortleve. It's the House of Alba in ESENCIA DE CAMBIO, Fernando Fitz-James Stuart and his wife Sofía Palazuelo, shot by Pablo Zamora, styled by Helena Contreras.

SEGUIR LA SENDA y Malick Bodian is the Binx reprint from UK Vogue, and UN DIAMANTE EN BRUTO by Pablo Zamora is an interview with actress Lux Pascal.

I like the colours and that's about it. Harper's Bazaar Spain profiled Aitana better way last year, and this just fails in comparison. There's no sense of life, no joy, zero energy - it's all just so flat and underwhelming.
