Vogue Italia October 2006 : Nicole Richie by Steven Meisel

I do like the idea of the Hollywood shoot, but I almost think the humor and irony behind it would have come off better if they had just used models. It's not that I don't want celebrities in magazines...I just think models would have made the shoot a bit more witty.

i agree. i like the idea of it, but it looks like an upscale us weekly issue to me. if meisel used models pretending to be the different celebrities, i would of liked it alot more.

nicole and paris do look gorgeous though.

I wonder if the celebs realize what he's doing...
I am sure most do...
but not sure if KFed would get it.

despise the meisel ed... even the idea of it seems so dated
"star style" in fashion is such a cliche,
and no need to say about the execution...
clicking on those images is such a waste of time

it's probably the worst ed appeared in vogue italia ever

I love the cover.....It's funny but great~
although I'm not into Nicole...but at the cover, she look great

it`s not funny
everyone hates terry richardson for his trashy "unprof " works but this is simply terrible i don`t have any words i`m feeling like i fliped through HEllo magazine
I am so unsure about this issue, but I think I must agree with you...:(

The idea with papparazzi shots from 2005 was much more better than this! :yuk:

completely agree

Well I must say it's smart of Vogue Italia to do this cause now they reach both the celebrity audience and the arty fashion crowd simply by having Meisel shoot it.

I feel it's a litte lazy executed compared to his paparazzi-ed, but still, if they actually styled these celebs and staged the red carpet it's pretty genious, since Meisel is the master of (maybe even the only one!) picking up strong photographic aestethics that exists outside the traditional fashion photography and put them in a fashion context. This is what makes him so outstanding, compared to f.ex Terry Richardson, who rarely steps outside his little world of snapshots.

But I too wonder though if the result hadn't been more interesting with models and not celebrities. Now it just feels a little too much like a ready-made.

i think the only way i could enjoy this ed. is if i knew for a fact that it was designed to mock celebs, and then the celebs posed not even realizing they were mocking themselves, for that is AMAZING and speaks so loudly of our celebrity culture and how people will do ANYTHING for publicity, even if it requires making an *** out of youself.

edit: sorry for the really long sentence and bad grammar

Agreed. The paparazzi editorial in 2005 was perfect and is now classic because of it's perspective of celebrity culture. Even more recently, the Fashion Rocks supplement featured models posed and dressed up as music stars (i.e. Pharrell by Liya K, Eminem by Sasha); not as a mockery but as an artistic point of view.
I find that this red carpet editorial just missed the mark (or maybe it just went over my head).

about Meisel edito
OK it may be a good idea, but what is a good idea with a result that doesn't suit my eyes :ninja: ?
A good book that I will read in the store and let in the store.

Come on you're kidding right? That's the idea. It's not like Meisel thinks Kathy Griffin or K-Fed are style icons. It's IRONIC.
of course it is but it's not supposed to be Charli Hebdo :ninja:

I love Steven Meisel's work, and I think he is the best fashion photographer out there and has been for a long time, but this story doesn't even qualify as an editorial. Regardless of what some others have said, there is NO irony evident in those photos. He has Amber Valletta is there. What's ironic about that? And there's nothing in the way that he shot Amber that is any different from the way he shot the horrible b-list celebrities. Federline is the only one who makes light of this story at all with his goofy expressions.
Steven is the best, hands down, but this one is just a mess. Compare it to last month's story... the difference in quality and concept is massive. He could shoot this with his eyes closed.
agree from A to Z

the editorial with Kate & Mario is great! It reminds me of old editorials both did. for instance in an old Dutch in which Mario follows Kate in Cannes.
