Vogue Portugal April 2018 by Branislav Simoncik

Together? For what price? 5 euros?
Hm.. It makes me wonder if the sales are going well.

When comes to Vogue Portugal I don't see people tagging as much the magazine with issues people bought, from last months, compare to earlier months when the team start magazine... I found it odd, since they do focus far more on social media and even of magazine content on the website as in the magazine is more main stream.

7€ I believe which makes sense since Vogue alone sells for 5€.

I've been talking with a few industry insiders and a few others that bought Vogue Portugal religiously in the past and many stopped buying the magazine. It stopped resonating with them.

I've heard a few saying that they are giving too much credit to artists from Central Europe not only photographers but also singers and such. I don't know if it's true, I stopped buying the magazine myself and I only see what is posted here.

Also 5€ may be too much for a magazine in Portugal and they should have thought that through. That just helped to increase a sense of "elitism" that many people do not approve. That and to wrap the magazine - many don't buy magazines if they can't see the table of contents inside first. That is pure Portuguese thinking - checking the quality before buying.

I'm just saying things that I've heard/read around the web or from people that had huge Vogue Portugal collections/insiders. I don't agree with many of these (like the price thing, I don't mind paying 5€ for a Portuguese magazine) but I've heard this consistently.

I don't know if they are having some sort of crisis or not (I think I would already have heard something), I don't know the numbers.

I myself supported them on their release on all my accounts and even defended them while talking with insiders. I stopped doing that after a couple of issues.

I do understand when people compare Vogue Portugal to Vogue Ukraine because, honestly, they look quite similar. The imaginary of VPt is closer to Ukraine than any other European Vogue nowadays and the Portuguese woman is far from the Central European woman.

Thank fot replying.

I don't have contact with insiders but it people who help spread a lot of Vogue Portugal throw social and bought few of the issues.

I heard the same and don't see a problem as well when comes to 5 euros per issue, but I am able to buy. If you are Portuguese, you know from where I am coming.

I stop buying as well - last issue I have is Alessandra Ambrosio so I can only give my input from it and what I see online.

From old team with this team - fashion content is basically non-existent; you have far more content of make up, promoting products, and decor; the interviews are basically to bloggers, musicians, actrices; you have around 4 editorials (I think currently) all resemble the aesthectic of northen countries; the casting director has a pretty clear preference for blondes and pale skin or for them to change a bit they put darker skin models... (I can give you more information but It might get to extensive)

Well... Call it whatever you want, but I am part of people who would buy religiously Vogue Portugal (on first day it would came out!) and who gave to this team 20 euros and was willing to give more if they actually did what magazine stands for. For what reason would this magazine be call Vogue Portugal? I just saw on Maxima Portugal something I never saw on VPT with old and even far far far from happening with this team - a full editorial with SS18 options of some of most know Portuguese Designers. I never saw it!

Frederico Martins work for Vogue Portugal

I notice always this when I see Branislav work and Frederico. Branislav always has a coldness and disntace on his photos when comes to Frederico It always has a feeling of warmth.

First is a great choice for a cover ! It's a Vogue for now, not looking at the past. It's very attractive.

Wow, what great covers but the first one is hands down one of the most striking shots I've seen in ages from a magazine. It's such fantastic use of colour and composition, just that would have been enough. I do wish that the other two covers were completely different though because it makes this one stand out even more.

I'm loving the artistic direction of this issue even though I wouldn't expect something like this from Vogue. But I'm not complaining because this looks fantastic and I might need to try get myself a copy.

I don't seem to be able to answer your private message but no, I am not. :P

And no, I have no connection to either the past Vogue team nor the current one. The only connection I ever had to them is that I was on the GQ office once or twice.

From my perspective, what's the point of buying Vogue Portugal when you can get Vogue Ukraine (much better and varied content) or Vogue Poland? They all seem to share mostly the same editorial direction. At some stage this cold and affected Eastern European aesthetic will pass (along with the Demna/Vetements Soviet era glorification) and what then? I doubt whether the ones currently buying into that will still be on board? It's like American magazines dismissing the 30+ age group who kept their titles thriving for years. Today's magazine reading youth don't have that same sense of loyalty to a title because they grew up in the social media age. That's the reason why TeenVogue went bust.

I think same...

The whole aesthectic is the way is organized. You had past team putting far more images, colour, a lot more throw pages. Specially for images but when comes to this one is text, white pages, less images... Minimalist.

But also I think is trace of the chef director, Sofia Lucas. I think she started with Vogue Portugal in the first years, than I don't know what happened after.
In recent years she was chef director of Máxima Portugal (also a magazine with a lot of years in the market and currently goin throw a extraordinary change with new director, Manuel Dias Coelho. He is or was connect to Condé Nast as Editorial Director in Portugal. Maxima currently resembles a lot of Vogue Portugal and their productions with only one editorial per issue are really great! I have feeling Cofina might wants to make this their fashion magazine.
Going back to Sofia...) I bought the magazine during her time as director and had a very ambitious ideia for an issue: a lot of male celebrities figures known here wearing heels. Breaking tabus basically...

I am saying this cuz I do see a lot of resembles. Although Maxima Portugal is more of lifestyle magazine, it had a lot of pages, text and minismalist like Vogue Portugal currently.

I think this type of direction works for smaller market only. Big title like Vogue US cannot risk doing so. It might grab a few readers attention or some social media buzz, but let’s be honest, those who buy fashion don’t really care about this images or so called new ideas...

Probably an unpopular opinion but I think they would benefit from incorporating a little more of their commercial side. Some of my favourite covers they've produced were Alessandra Ambrosio's in January and Maria Borges' last October - both accessible models (Victoria's Secret etc.) but given a chance to do something outside of their standard work and create something impactful and interesting. This is a little too on the artsy side for me.

I might agree . I am curious first to see the PR’s that are supplying clothes . Is the Fashion director using big designers like Prada , Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent ? I really don’t know .

Photography wise it seems a bit choppy but they have definitely chose an unconventional direction using same 1 or 2 photographers closely associated with Fashion Director . Both I believe from Prague. I also don’t get any cultural POV as a Portuguese Edition . Portugal is warm and sexy , very beautiful but none of that DNA is visible YET! How no one has shot a spread on the streets by day or by night in Lisbon is very strange .

Let’s see how they go . Can only wish them best success . Be curious about the response and vibe at the Suzy Menkes Conference.

I think most of clothes are provide by Jan Kralicek, fashion editor connections. The one you are refering to, I think is Ana Caracol. She was on team since the start, and I never saw so many haute couture pieces, collections first hand.

Yet? It's already their 7th issue...
I don't see any member of team actually caring about it.

Just came from their website and you had 2 days with some of most interesting people in fashion and what they stand out is Hilary Swan and Philipp Plein.

They also posted an interview to possible most influence portuguese woman in fashion, who is connected to the franchising of Gucci, Amorim Luxury Group and Fashion Clinic. And what is talk about in the interview? family and feminism.

Fashion content on this magazine seem to have died.

I don't think Conde Nast or Suzy Menkes is too worried with that.

Branislav Simon was shooting today with another team from easthood of Europe.

I was reading today some news about Vogue Czec and the EIC used to be IEC of Elle Czec and the team of Vogue Portugal used to work for them.

Jan was the fashion director of Elle
Branislav used to shoot most of the covers and fashion content.

Now we can expect this team working in vogue czec too.

I knew that re the Fashion Director and the photographer being connected to Elle . If they end up ALSO being Fashion Director and go to photographer at Vogue Czech that would a slight conflict of interest as no other Vogue that I’m aware of has that same arrangement.

I guess we will just have to wait and see. If there is any truth to this I would expect Sofia Lucas to find a new team .

Thanks for the reply

I think that they will collaborate to the magazine. I think they are friends with the EIC.

The problem is everything will look so cold...

Collaborate is one thing , continue to act as Fashion Director and use only this photographer is completely something else. It will largely depend on how successful the magazine is and if there is any profit since the take over.
