(ok i dunno if this has been posted or if it's posted in the right place or not.)

Vogue UK recently just up a Covers Archive thing on their site vogue.co.uk with covers dating back to its launch in 1916. go check it out. the early covers look so different to today's covers.

yet with this new addition, they took away (well i think they did cos i can't find it) the In Vogue part of their site where they give a summary of the contents of a particular issue.

Yea I was gonna say sumin bout this, it really is lovely to look at! Quite a few I've never seen before.

Yes! I was looking at them a while back. A few of my favourites:

it's not complete:doh:

for example:there're just 2 covers in the year 1992:cry:

Out of the Past | British Vogue

October 21, 2009

Seeing that T [Magazine] is still in the grip of Anglomania, we were happy to learn that High Valley Books over in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, has a new cache of vintage British Vogues. For fans of the current British Vogue, a savvy magazine that doesn’t take itself too seriously, the earlier issues come as a shock. First, because typography and graphic design are light years from where they were 50 years ago. And second, because photography, despite the best efforts of Lord Snowdon and David Bailey, is now on another planet.

It’s also a stunning reminder of just how dependent the world has become on the culture of consumerism. The older issues, with their recipes and patterns and fashion illustrations look positively pastoral, pokey almost. But it’s fun to look back on Grace Coddington’s career as she moved up the masthead, and to discover that Liz Tilberis, the editor from 1988 to 1992, was always obsessed with Princess Diana. It’s also interesting to learn that decades never end when they’re supposed to, that the look of the ‘80 dragged on well into the ’90s. And guess what? In 1981, Calvin Klein’s clothes were really great.

^I was looking at all of those covers on their website last night... they have so many vintage UK Vogues for sale. I'd love to have some of them! Someone must have died/wanted to get rid of them.

Ooo thanks for posting this! Looking at all the old covers is exciting, and also inspirational. Being a photographer I'm always looking for something to inspire, and sometimes it comes from the distant past.

What a bizarre statement:
And second, because photography, despite the best efforts of Lord Snowdon and David Bailey, is now on another planet.

Does he mean the technique or what? I hate the idea that some people have that photography is somehow moving toward something better. Different epochs have their different charms. Photography is an art. Not a technique. The photography today is not better because the technique has become more advanced. The idea that photographers today are better than Bourdin and Newton, Arrowsmith, Parkinson and Bailey....I'm going to laugh myself to sleep now.
