I think the difference between a straight-edge and other people who just lead a healthy life style is that
1. straight-edgers are into the punk rock/hardcore scene and
2. straight-edgers are usually proud of their life style, and promote it... ex.: the X on the hands and other sxe [means straight-edge] tatoos, t-shirts, whatever. They're more enthusiastic about it.

Actually I could, tecnically, be considered one...
but I don't know, I just fall into the category I guess... I like the whole sxe thing, but it's not like I thought "I think I'm gonna go straight-edge". I'm just a girl who doesn't smoke, drink, do drugs or have casual sex, who's a vegan and is into punk... But it's just me, it's not like I decided "I'm gonna do what it takes to be a sxe". Which I think is part of being sxe, you know, actually making the choice to be one, choosing to follow this way of thinking, and promoting it.

:)

yeah, i think straight edge kids are more out there because they want to make a statement. most people think that people who listen to punk/hardcore do drugs, smoke, and drink a lot. straight edgers make a statement that though they like the music, they're not who you think they are. i think...
and no i dont drink, smoke, do drugs or eat meat ^_^

It's almost like a cycle- last year everyone was "prep" now they're "emo", it will never end! AE and Abercrombie duds have now been replaced with black eyeliner and cheap bands pins.

Also what really bothers me is that people read so much into it, like every action is either emo or it isn't. I was recently asked by a fellow class mate whether playing field hockey was emo. I was dumb-founded. Why whould such a thing even matter?

Emo is just turning into a dumb pop-culture pharse used to catergorize people into a certain norm. It's what you want it to be, its not a defintion from urbandictionary.com nor is it a white middle-class girl who cuts herself. It's whatever you make it.

couldn't have said better..... ;)

'emo' is the latest hypocritical trend to hit my college.

the followers claim to be individual, yet look the same.

when this inconsistency is pointed out, they protest that they were into it before it became a trend. surely they cant all have the same excuse?

worst of all...my boyfriend is beginning to show signs!

Save him before its too late. Burn the Hawthorne Heights, My Chemical Romance, and Autumn To Ashes CD's!

Throw out the box of black hair dye, remove all razors from his place and make sure you take away his studded belts and girl pants :ninja:

The 'emo revolution' is taking over the world!!!:o
Yeh and I also find it funny that the emo people are trying so hard to Not conform....but by doing so they're conforming...

As a style, emo looks disgusting. I don't like the music either, and they seem quite ridiculous.

I think emo kids these days are mainstream.

i concur.

At least they have Viacom and Fox on there side now. They might have a little more sucess than last time.:p

i dont like emo very much. i dont reli get it.
It's like emotional music, clothes, gothic stuff. Am i right?

Please explain more.

Most "emo" kids in my school are fakes. Posers...whatever....its sort of like a depressed wanna-be punk.
"scene" kids are often mistaken for emo.

I dont really like emo kids...well most of the ones that I've met in my area. They seem pretty stuck up and act like they went through this whole life experience and knows everything, and think that they are better than everyone else. I think their are just a bunch of fakers who want to look hardcore & cool, maybe for some its just the style and music that they like and its how they want to express themselves but the ones that I know they just want to fit in and act like their the Shiiiznit is a bunch of bs and fakers, one day they're all preppy and cute next day theyre all hardcore with tons of black liner, black clothes, and funky hair, that I dont like.

Emo is short for Emotional. Everybody has emotions. People who claim themselves to be Emo are fake. Then there are other people, like me, who are constantly being CALLED emo just because I like eyeliner and messy hairstyles. Things get confusing when people over-analyze things like this. Sometimes its just kids trying to express themselves and be different, not trying to be emo. Its extremely annoying at times to be called EMO when IM NOT.
Not all "emo" kids cut their wrists and hide in corners =)

I love this thread...

Doesn't it become unimaginative and hackneyed when almost every kid starts to look like death? Could emo be the new false appearance for teenagers to hide under?

^I think almost every huge trend among teenagers is unimaginative---not just the emos. If you mean that teenagers would be " hiding themselves " under this appearance (I'm not sure what you meant), I don't think that's the case...this is just another trend. I don't think many of the emo people are that "depressed" (including faking it), they just think that kind of style is different and cool and the music is different and cool and that it is so different and cool to have lots of emo friends to dye hair with, smoke with and get drunk with.

As soon as another huge trend like this comes along, they are all going to forget this. I'm predicting another Spice Girls/Britney Spears & co-style revolution, lots of radio pop, Pepsi ads and pastels.

Even though I like grunge, I think there are some similarities between it and emo. Also the new so-called "beatnik" trend is huge among emos.

Emo is such a joke. Seriously, people my age use this term way too often to describe everything. Everything emo is pretty much whiny.

As for the fashion? Eh.

I agree that emo is a huge new tread for teenagers. I mostly think that people who call themselves emo are annoying and are just saying that because its the new thing to be. I do like some of the fashion that is labelled as emo... and I love the music.. sorry!
