What Is Your Favorite 'Basic' Piece?

These are the basics I've been wearing a lot the past 10-15 years or so:
501s
John Smedley knits (wool and cotton)
RM Williams boots
Clarks desert boots

For summer, all I wear is a white T-shirt, blue jeans and nikes

For winter, I mostly wear jeans with a wool military-inspired jacket.

Tank tops or camis are in almost every single outfit of mine, even if they aren't showing... I think they're so comfortable. I need them, hah, but other than that probably jeans.

ribbed tanks/wifebeaters.

Love them in (almost) every colour/brand. I wear them under everything..sweaters, cardigans, jackets..and wear them alone in the summer. for home or for out. i also like them more than camis cos it can cover your bra straps.;)

For work/job interviews/professional functions I have two trusted Armani suits: A pant suit in black, and skirt one in brown tweed. They both have one button so it's flattering for a petite person. Thank God for these suits!

I'm much more capricious and impractical when it comes to going-out outfits, so I'm afraid there is no favorite or basic in this case. However, I do like to build an outfit around shoes. I don't think I own a lot of shoes so I would consider them basic enough? Like my fellow TFSer's, I am very fond of Manolo, Louboutin, Lanvin, Balenciaga, Marc Jacobs, and Prada. They are all in constant rotation so I assume they are the basics in my wardrobe?

Finally, I'm much more of a hopeless bum than I wish to sound! Since this is a fashion forum I do feel the duty to speak more 'fashionably'. Most of the time (these days), I actually wear j-crew sweaters, yoga pants, and Uggs. Since I've been working from home, I am free to indulge in comfort. Oh, how I will miss these days when they come to end!

It's a toss-up between:

Cream or black ballet flats
Beige trench coat
Slate-grey cotton pea coat
Black skirt

Ballet flats. They can dress up any casual outfit. They can come pretty cheap too, and in all sorts of different colors, finishes, shapes, etc. Just wonderful.

A tight elbow-length scoop-neck dress that goes to the knees (and is absolutely not as tacky as it sounds! ;)). I wear it in the winter as my bottom layer and in the summer with interesting sandals and jewelry. I will cry when that thing bites the dust...

I have worn my black tropical wool gabardine trench coat from Jones New York for 20 years. Purchased in 1987 for $350 while on my honeymoone in San Francisco. I can no longer button it but tie the belt behind my back. I have worn it everywhere from clubbing, to the Paris Opera to work. It makes every outfit I own look stylish and everytime I wear it I feel like a million!
