What to wear to a fashion show

i really appreciate everyone's thoughtful comments in this thread.

ohh! softgrey, did you get those chloe platforms you were talking about on another thread? are they the black patent slingbacks? i love those!!!

jeans brand = superfine (haven't gotten them yet but some girl at barneys is supposed to call when the wax wash comes in and i'll find another pair, most likely just black if i cant find a dark waxy wash without contrast stitching (kind of boring but goes with everything)...i MIGHT bring a pair of blue sass & bides for a casual night but i can't figure out a nice looking outfit for those.

now that you mention it i see how leggings could look young. i'd have to be careful...don't want the "assistant" look haha

jssy--i was looking at some "front row" pictures on style.com and there is def a pic of amanda hearst i think wearing behnaz sarafpour at behnaz sarafpour. just using common sense i would think that unless you're amanda hearst, you could look like you're trying too hard if you wear a really distinctive outfit of a designer at the show..esp head to toe. but then i think it's case sensitive even..

and another question now: are there certain shows for which people tend to dress up, and other shows where the look is more casual? are some days more "important" than others..do people dress down for say, friday and saturday, and start dressing up when the bigger shows start?

and softgrey..as for trying too hard--i say if you have a killer outfit, wear it. seriously. if you look good, you look good. it's better imho to look good in a really fashion forward way than to look like all of the socialite and vogue types (who, even though they look really good, look somewhat indistinguishable at times)

oh and another question..if you look young, but you're as well dressed as anyone in the standing line...would you get a seat? or would you not be taken seriously?

It kind of bothered me how concerned Jackie was with how Mimi's actions would change the trainers' perception of her. If she's so concerned with mainting her professional reputation, shouldn't she not be spending time at bars/parties/etc with her employees in the first place?

people def dress more for the bigger shows and i think for the ones at night...cause there might be a party after...

the thing is...most people are going back to the office or to appointments between shows...
and you don't want to look too dressed up in the office...
so everyone i know doesn't really get too fancy for anything other than marc....
marc is def the BIG show...basically-the ONLY show that matters....
not so much to see the clothes...but to see everyone else...
:P...

i doubt i will have a seat for that though...i don't know...

seat assignments are usually given prior to shows...but like tric said...
if there are empty seats...you can usually just grab one casually..
i almost never sit in my assigned seat......
and i have never been asked to move...except to the front row...
...

i just remember last september people were wearing shorts and flat sandals to shows...sooo underdressed...very casual...
:ermm:...

softie...
i think wearing the chloe's to every show is totally fine...
to me, it's about personal style, and if they work for you, then go for it...
i remember carine roitfeld wearing some suede balenciagas to almost every show a few seasons back...

on the jeans...i wore paper denim & cloth in a straight leg, rinse wash...
"blue" denim seems a bit too casual imo...
and i know you're a fan of stovepipe/straight legs (as opposed to skinny jeans)...^_^
i think it's nice to have a denim option...

elschic...the jeans sound perfect...
you picked an "of-the-moment" label, but an interesting wash...

certain shows are definitely dressier than others...
carolina herrera, oscar de la renta, narciso rodriguez, tuleh come to mind...
a line like marc/marc by marc, luella, etc. brings out a more "downtown" crowd, so the people dress accordingly...
although certain people (anna wintour, for example) dress up all the time, no matter the show...

doing designer at the designer's show seems like a front-row thing to me, as softie said...
but i don't see an issue with it...
although i wouldn't wear a head to toe look...

Some of you are mentioning jeans! I thought the attire was supposed to be generally black, so this is a relief.

One question. How do you know what seat is yours? Do they tell you before you go in, or must you look for the seat with your name on it?

as i mentioned...you will get your seating assignment prior to the show...
either they will call you with it or they will give it to you when they check your name at the door...

i haven't seen names on seats in a long time...

if they don't give you a seat assignment- it means you are standing...

**thanks for all the input everyone...
it's very helpful...

NYC-London(not that anyone goes to london)-paris-milan...?

would you dress up or down?...
subtle or over the top?...

and i am NOT talking fantasy here...i am talking REALITY please...
Dress Down, and subtle. For some reason the guys who dress in the real cutting edge, over the top stuff just amuse me; it always seems a little pretentious to turn up like that (just what I think). Maybe If i was a girl flaunting it on the front row in Paris, rather than a guy with longish hair, i'd think differently. With fashion weeks, everyones so conscious of clothes and style, it's more fun just to dress down, or safe, and pay attention to what you're there for.

I know a few people who go to london, it's not exactly the most high profile fashion week; but it has it's moments. At the very least the city is nice  unlike Milan which was the dullest city i've ever been to.

Berlin fashion week (oh yeah they have one) is probably the strangest, half the shows are in random night-club type setups without seating (at like 10pm at night), which carry onto into after-parties and people were wearing everything from suits, to jeans and tshirts, to vintage style clothes. But then again, Berlin fashion week? haha

edit, ps; thats from a guys point of view

fair enough, I'll just have to content myself with looking at candids online and trying to imagine who that person might be...:innocent:

(so please guys, do outrageous things, get yourselves photographed, for our sake!) ^_^

Seating assignments are determined way ahead of time, so I'm pretty sure they don't go based on looks...Honestly, I think you are going to have a blast at the shows this season...I myself can't wait, as it will be the first season I'm going that I actually live in NY...I used to have an hour commute either way...but I'm excited for this round of shows!

Does everyone in this thread get invited to the shows? Wow, take me with you! :shifty: :ninja:

As far as your coat is concerned...wear it! It's fashion week...why not! To keep cool, maybe pair it with a little dress and heels...

I only get to go to a few shows this season, but next NY fashion week i'll definitely show what I am wearing (probably going to all shows next time). ^_^

As for getting there, I pretty much live on the other side of the U.S., but it will be worth it for sure.
