What's ubercool?

maverick, i would appreciate IF you could explain your issues in detail by PM and please stop repeating your accusations towards the original poster

"a dumb bag on a cool girl is a cool bag; a cool bag on a dumb girl is a dumb bag".

If you are interested in learning more about trendspotting, you can watch this PBS Frontline expose entirely online for free: highly recommended! I learned a lot, and guarantee it will make you think twice.

"THE MERCHANTS OF COOL"
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/cool/view/

They spend their days sifting through reams of market research data. They conduct endless surveys and focus groups. They comb the streets, the schools, and the malls, hot on the trail of the "next big thing" that will snare the attention of their prey--a market segment worth an estimated $150 billion a year. They are the merchants of cool: creators and sellers of popular culture who have made teenagers the hottest consumer demographic in America. But are they simply reflecting teen desires or have they begun to manufacture those desires in a bid to secure this lucrative market? And have they gone too far in their attempts to reach the hearts--and wallets--of America's youth?
FRONTLINE [...] explores the symbiotic relationship between the media and today's teens, as each looks to the other for their identity.

I second Lena. Welcome and thanks!

I actually watched all the segments, and they are interesting! It's like "No logo" by Naomi Klein in a way: the facts are neither new nor revolutionary, but they are nicely edited, digestible and educational; a great summary which really helps connect the dots. A possible eye-opener for a lot of people, if they would only watch it!

Ubercool right now is being different, and not conforming in a complete way. People are straying away from celebs and people in the limelight that try to hard to conform. This is probably why the Olsens style is so popular right now. If you want specific fashion items, the lists will be very subjective, but in my opinion:

-huge sunglasses-the Linda Farrow vintage ones are great
-skinny jeans
-billowing tops to contrast the jeans
-exclusiveness-items that are hard to get are hotter than ever-just look at the madness over the spy bags/paddingtons/silverados-

It will also always be very ubercool to say something is genuine vintage because it means you sourced it yourself, i.e. you have an inert sense of style and can tell a unique piece from all the trash and saying something is vintage implies that no one else will ever have it.
