I'm looking into purchasing some whey protein powder.
I was wondering which brands/flavors you guys would recommend.

Also- has it helped you lose weight/ promote lean muscle mass?
And what do you prefer mixing it with?

Thanks so much!:D

This is what I am using for my actual diet,I choose the chocolat flavour,I mix it only with mineral water, but u can mix it with milk if u prefer, but u will have more carbs,so if u want to loose very fast ur fat,and not ur muscles,so less carbs and more proteins is better.

I already did a proteins based diet two years ago,and lost some 15kilos,in 2months,the fastest diet I know, and U don't feel hungry or so,as u can take protein snacks.

I did the Whey Protein drink thing for a while. For me, the chocolate was the best flavor (I mixed it with water for fewer calories). Overall, the idea sounds like a good one and I felt like I was doing something 'better' for my body....unfortunately, I got nauseated by it really quickly and stopped drinking it.

Had I kept up, I might have lost weight....but it eventually got to be too much for me (had to hold my breath and chug it quickly, haha).

Now I have a huge two gallon container of it in my bottom cabinet, collecting dust

it depends on what you intend to use the whey protein for? protein supplement? after gym? before gym? fat loss? meal replacement?

theres different kinds of whey i.e hydrolysed...isolate..blah blah for different concerns, i.e less bloat feeling blah blah.

you have to be pretty clear on what you are using it for and how to use it properly, Im using Pvl hydroflow..hydrolysed whey isolate. It is 86g of protein per 100gms and is pretty low on carbs and stuff.

If for fat loss or similar less carb, most people will recommend at last 90g of protein per 100g, but the thing is alot of these labels arent accurate, because in the industry, alot of them havent been evaluated by the necessary authorities, they have just been tested but not evaluated, theres a difference, and to find a brand of sports supplement is often trial and error, some people just do not react as much to it as others.

The best advice would be to go to a health supplement store with a wide range of products, something specialised not a chain type GNC, where the guys are honest and look confident when the are explaining it. Also it is easier to list to them your needs and stuff and for them to give you a better recommendation as these smaller private stores would be more familliar to the products they stock(often ones they have used before) then something that is widely commercially promoted. If skeptical, try a different store, and compare opinions. Although I can tell you now that there is no real correct answer to this, mostly it is just preference, its what works for you.

Good luck in your protein powder search!

I'm using one from a GNC.

Sorry BigBen -- its close to my work.

I do cardio three times a week -- usually somewhere between 10-15 miles on the bike. And then three times a week I do strength training and weight training.

I've only recently begun, but have managed to increase my lean muscle, and lose some weight. I have about another ten pounds I want to drop, and to bulk up more in my chest, arms and legs.

I use it to help my muscles recover from the workouts, and it's a great low cal breakfast really.

Here's how I use it.

8oz Light Soy Milk
Two handfuls of blueberries
2 scoops of Strawberry Whey Powder
Tablespoon of Peanut Butter

I blend this and then add about 7 ice cubes and blend again.

It's a great shake. Tastes like a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwhich.

Another great one ( I call this one the Elvis)

8oz Light Soy Milk
One Banana
Teaspoon of Honey
Tablespoon of Peanut Butter
2 Scoops of Whey Powder

blend and blend with the ice again.

hmmm. I was thinking about trying it. Mainly for the anti-oxidants it's supposed to have.

I heard about another weight loss supplement called something like Bolange or Solange or something????

Yeah. I'm about to give up on my Creatine as I'm not really seeing any results, and know that I can help my muscles recover with just using the Whey or other proteins.

ive heard of CLA...never tried it

Im not a fan of any form fat-loss supplements, I used to be on thermogenics years ago, and dint feel comfortable at all. I was so uncomfortable that it affected my performance at the gym, it made my body feel overly warm, nauseus and made me feel sick. I had to consume huge amounts of water which kinda left me with an imbalance feeling. I don't know much about supplements, some people swear by it, or use it for short-term like models needing a certain size for a shoot, but I highly advise against going with it long-term. Its too chemicalised and it doesnt affect that much in most cases.

That being said, one of my cousins had a fat loss pill prescribed by the doctor and she lost like 15 kgs in a month, but she felt awkwardly sick as well, so heh guess its another case of what works for you?

hahaha sorry been rambling and not much help ;)

Creatine needs proper loading, and once again theres different types of creatine. Unused creatine becomes fat btw, read it somewhere. Creatine does work for me somehow, I just don't like the unnatural feel that I get..it allows me that extra set at the end when im completely dead.

I use Mushashi's recovery formula on my heavy gym days, other than that a regular glutamine mix should assist in muscle recovery, also eating after a workout is vital to muscle recovery, rather the speed of muscle recovery.

Are you a trainer??

I've hit a stand still in my workouts and weight loss. In the past year I've lost about 30 pounds. I'm starting to see muscle.

But honestly with the workouts I do, and the diet I'm on, I'd thought I'd see more results. I've recently stepped it up a bit more, so we'll see how it progresses.

I just thought I'd be seeing more results.

Maybe my body is not meant to be a certain way. LOL!

My trouble area is my stomach. I just can't get it flat no matter how I ab excercise it to death.

dude...ure too fast on too many threads for me to reply!!!! arghhh

im not a trainer...i used to be a combat paramedic in the army who did sports medicine and am an avid gym buff

with regards to hitting a stand still...vary your workouts...the body does adapt to certain patterns and reduces its efficiency. I do not think Creatine should be used with any fat loss program, its too counter-productive. I would reduce the weight until im close to the weight loss goal, and then start up Creatine and go hard muscle. Even then, Ill use a Creatine formula, not Creatine by itself, its too difficult to load in my opinion. Most serious gym people will tell you its all in the supplements. I believe supplement are all they are...supplements...and that you have to get the first 95 percent right first, and the supplements will push the remaining 5 percent to 100!!!

You will see muscle when your body fat percentage drops past a certain point...you most probably cant see abs yet is because your ab muscles are BEHIND the fat!!! abs will appear no matter how undefined, at a low body fat percentage, hence the saying "last to come, first to go" because the tummy area is the last place the fat will be reduced and the first place for fat to be put on, hence covering the abs!!!

One thing that i will do until i die, for my abs, is using the swiss ball for crunches. I have very low body fat, but still, they help bring out the definition better than sit-ups, floor crunches, cable crunches, etc. Make sure you can stabilize yourself first. When you feel comfortable doing crunches on the ball, make sure u stretch all the way back, which helps bring out the abs more. Thats why the ball is better, because it gives you a greater range of motion. Hope that helps out your stomach routine!

The Swiss ball does seem to give a greater range of motion, but once the angle becomes negative, the focus point switches and minor back is involved. It takes a rather advance ab-player with a strong core to be able to do negative angle sit-ups/swiss ball crunches.

Floor crunches, cable crunches etc. are criticised for their lack of angle, movement, rotation, however as with anything and everything else, form is everything....people rushing through crunches wont achieve much, 200 poor form crunches will never be more efficient than 20 good form crunches.

Bottomline, once again its preference and what works for you that matters!! and variation on the exercises to keep things fresh and interesting!!!

Cool!

Thanks for the great advice.

The whey I'm using is Designer Whey (looked this morning) and I get it at GNC for those who are curious.

Yeah I know which one it is the moment you mentioned GNC...I read somewhere and hearsay that GNC product have connections to EAS, so it should be pretty reputed, but I dunno, I used to use some of the GNC mega performance range and I felt it was lacklustre to say the least.

Then again if you think about it...its still protein...fuel those muscles!!!

;)
