The supermodel era is GONE, and I am so NOT expecting to see it make a comeback.....

Gemma, Marija and Daria sure are popular, but their popularity is NOTHING when put next to Moss and Campbell.......

Gisele is big, but far from being a household name.

Of course you are right. But the question was - who do you think could become the 21st century supermodel. Not who is the supermodel. Because the only option at the moment is Gisele, Kate and the oldies.

i believe Gisele is already there and Karolina simply needs to date an actor or singer to get there. You need to be at the level where you'll tell my brother that's Gisele and he says ooh. Not thats Gisele...remember the one from the victoria's secret, no not that one she was on the cover of Gq...

ı know nobody will be like kate moss or naomi campbell... but ı'm doing a research about this to my newspaper... I'm writing fashion news.. and my next subject is young models who will be very famous in the future...

may be gisele yes :)

the next BIG thing will have to offer something which the old supermodel dont/didnt

as soon as there's a girl with attitude people will say 'oh shes trying to be the new naomi'
equally as soon as theres a girl who goes to parties dressed up and being a bit rock and roll people will say 'oh shes thinks shes the new kate moss'

part of the reason why these girls got so huge in the first place was because there wasnt anything else like them, they inspired and intreagued people.

if anyone is to be like that in the future they themselves will have to offer something original

let's say who will be a good model in the future... which model always be wanted by big fashion houses for advertising campaign....

for example lily cole rejected de beers... she is so young but everybody wants her for their show and ad... what other names can we say like her.. she won't be next naomi or kate... but she is going very well...

Well, er, not even Naomi or Kate were the first to do those things. I think that Janice and Gia preceded them. There are so many ways to have attitude and so many ways to be rock n roll. Plus, you will find that it always works for a movie star to be glamorous and for a rock star to be rebellious. I don't think models have to be particularly inventive that way either. They just have to have their special LOOK. And even in that case - it worked really well for Cindy C to be taking Gia's Cosmo persona and making it her own.

Personally, I think it is up to the powers that be. Why would they be reiterating someone like SJP on the American Vogue cover rather than someone young and drop dead gorgeous? I still haven't figured this out...

i never said that they were the first did i? i just said that these days those are the people that girls will be instantly compared to

its not true that having a special look is all they need at ALL, dont be fooled
i know models who have such an amazing look i want to scream but i know they wont get anywhere because of the way THEY are
none of the current 'it' girls have the same kind of lives as Kate or Naomi do they?
because they just dont bring it they way that they do.
it takes much more than looks, believe me

Do you guys think that Adriana Lima is a supermodel/household name. I mean enough guys are lusting over her already...

"Supermodel" the way that word is used now (any model that's famous enough to be talked about on Entertainment Tonight or Access Hollywood), definitely. Household name, I guess it depends what neighborhood, but mainstream USA, no way.

Agencies are so busy trying to find the next new face that they don't give their models the push to build a career that they did during the supermodel era. The industry is also fighting the "stars" for campaigns and covers mode of thinking right now. Agents are sent all over the world to scout and the industry is filled to the brim with young models looking for a career. The era of the "supermodel" is over. The elements that came together to created their stardom are a thing of the past.

I am not saying that gemma, daria or a handful of other certain top models aren't famous but that is no comparison to the celebrity status that "the supermodels" had.

well personally i tread very lightly when using the term supermodel just coz i feel it applies to very few individuals (even with adriana being my favorite i wouldnt quite give her that status) BUT i do think she's quickly becoming a household name if she's not one already. for example, vh1's list of hottest hotties had her at #80 or something. now i'm not saying vh1 is the official sayer of who's hot and who's not BUT i do think it says something when she is on a list like that. she's popular enough for ppl to know who she is. so yeah, i'd def. agree with the household name aspect :)

sean i think the new thing for models is to treat it like a career not a lifestyle. most of them these days seem to enjoy living normal lives when not in front of a camera.

also to the comment about gemma being too unique to gain that sort of popularity, i think it is necessary to have a unique quality.

people wouldn't remember kate moss if she was 5'10" her height is something that separates her and also gives people hope and all the wishy washy things they want to believe.

i think in this day and age to get close to that you have to be a victoria's secret model.

There will never be another moss, campbell, or any of the "supermodels"

That was a freak occurence. It was a combination of a lack of glamourous celebrities in Hollywood at the time, a decade of excess and a few very influential designers. No matter how big or successful models of today become, they will never reach that level of celebrity...because that is essentially what those girls became, they became celebrities. The one person who might have had that level of fame was Natalia Vodianove, pre Calvin contract of course. She was literally an overnight sensation. She had a story, not an editorial, an actual story devoted to her in US Vogue, not to mention becoming the darling of the fashion world...but even still, she never would have been as big as say, Linda Evangelista. That era is gone, never to be seen again.

Edit: I also agree with what wyatt said about today's models treating it like a career.....that also plays a big part in why there will never be another age of the supermodel.
