Why Can't Anybody Dress Themselves In La?

I moved to LA 4 years ago for business, and brought with me a very chic wife. Well, she took the vamoos express, but she was the only person in this city who could put a trendy ensemble together.

No one in this town, men or women, are anything but decked out in crap. The store on Melrose that sells Ryan Seacrest's t-shirts, if you call that taste, is "trendy".

Can you imagine a city where the two Fred Segal shops are the places to go for "style"? I've bought gifts for women from Mlle. Pearl in Brentwood, very cool, and these women, good looking souls, can't stand them and won't wear one.

The latest fad this summer were whatever those flat slippers are called. Literally every actress in town was wearing them. Now that it's getting cool...75 mind you, the Uggs are out.

What gives with LA?

Hasn't LA always been like this? I always thought it was the trendy, trashy, tacky, sl*tty fashion capitol of the world, everything determined by what Paris Hilton wears and what all the "fashion" magazines tell their followers what to rush out and buy so they can all look the same.

I haven't been to LA in years but my cousin just moved to NYC for a bit from LA...and there's nothing "trendy, trashy, tacky, sl*tty" about her. She dresses 180 degrees away from me...completely different style...but she's still very effortlessly cool.

I didn't say everyone in LA was like that.

There are exceptions and there are cool stores in LA (Maxfield, Barneys, etc..), but in general you are right. I've been there twice (family) and I have not a slightest desire to go back, except for the crazy sales - I mean they buy NOTHING if it's not in Vogue. I was in shopping shangri-la when I was there, all my faves were at 70% off - stuff that would've been long gone in NYC.

Anyway, we've had this discussion before, there is trash and good everywhere.

I know Space is a big fan of LA, and I'm sure it's not for nothing. I guess that there is a niche of cool people that you have to find. And unlike NYC, you don't exactly see hordes of people roaming the streets like in New York, so it's harder to make a judgement. Walking on Rodeo you'll see the same disgusting people as on 5th Ave.

I think you have to understand that LA is not a palce where people get 'dressed up" every thing is very casual, effortless and free.

There are lot's of intresting people, things and stores in LA, but it's much more unexposed becuas the other things get so much attention becuase of the celebrities.

There are lots of artists and VERY creative people in LA, alongside the paris hiltons.

If you would like some shoping recomendations I will give you some.

that's informative, thanks Space! If I ever go back I'll remember this post.

I would also like to add H by Lorenzo, which is a decent store - Dirk Bikkimbergs, Costume National, etc.
8622 W Sunset Blvd
West Hollywood, CA 90069-2302

And there was also a small store across the street that carries Margiela, but I don't remember the name of it.

Also, Barneys, I guess - that's near Rodeo

Getting back to my original question, why don't women here have any sense of style?

I'm not talking about the Beverly Hills set...they live in their own world and nobody pays any attention to them. Nobody shops on Rodeo, even Barney's or Saks on Wilshire.

That's a superb list of stores, Spacemiu. But this is one big town, and virtually nobody dresses decently. And in fact there are lots of places to see people on foot.

Additionally in LA, we're ignoring the Valley, and you can't ignore the Valley since tons of stars live there. There are a few nice boutiques on Ventura; certainly nothing like the Eastside, but a day doesn't go by in the Valley when I don't see the likes of Kevin Spacey, whom I sat next to at the counter having a pastrami sandwich at Art's Deli, not that he's a star but an hour ago I was at the bank with Randy Jackson (driving a double size Hummer), I see Janel whatever from the West Wing at Priscilla's Coffee all the time. And everybody's a slob. Of course Clooney is everywhere, hitting on every girl the day after she moves into the Valley. But I'm telling you, you can look chic in the beautiful weather and the relaxed lifestyle, and women here don't get it. None of them read Vogue...InStyle is as close as it gets. They think the clothing on The OC is cool. The only guy who dresses well, but I don't mean avant garde, is Keifer, another Valley denizen.

Faust , i for gto H lorenzo is very cool

also i shpould add American rag-150 S La Brea Ave

I'm from the Valley, i spent my childhood on ventura blvd, I like it it's a good street.

As far as celebriies dress, I don't really care, I don't like most of them.

I think there are well dressed people in LA, but it's not a uber-fashion mind set.

In her book Confessions of an Heiress, Paris Hilton says sweats are the "LA uniform"
