Your Favorite Movie Wardrobes

Two recent wardrobes I loved were Perks of Being A Wallflower and Argo...more for their precision than anything else. Both films really did a great job capturing their time periods (90s for Perks and 70s for Argo).

@Gabor: I really loved Shakespeare in Love's wardrobe. It was released in 1998 or did you mean a film set in the late 90s?

I completely agree with you, Sobriquet87, about the wardrobe for Perks! I was really impressed with the level of details which they paid attention to when it came to the wardrobe. Emma Watson's, Sam, wore so many great outfits, I particularly loved her slightly oversized sweaters. And Gabor, a few other films that are set/made in the 90's that I think have great wardrobes include Clueless, Empire Records, and 10 Things I Hate About You. Also, check out Ghost World. It wasn't made in the 90's but I think it has that vibe, especially from the way Enid and Rebecca dress.

I liked every outfit from Titanic, Elizabeth & Elizabeth The Golden Age, Atonement for the Green Dress and Monster in Law  every outfit worn by Jane Fonda was fabulous!

A View To A Kill (1985)
Ghost (1990) - I loved Whoopi Goldberg's outfits in that movie, in the funniest sense.
The Hours (2002)

Loved Lauren Hutton wardrobe in American Gigolo. Quintessential upper class but with a effortless, elegant and casual vibe. Plus Richard Gere in Armani suits were bliss.

Some of my favourites..

3 Women
American Gigolo
A Single Man
Belle de Jour
Damage
Eyes Wide Shut
Gilda
Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus
Humoresque (beautiful 40s fashion. Joan Crawford films always had the best wardrobes!)
La Belle et la Bête (spectacular. you have to see for yourself)
Mermaids
Network
Picnic at Hanging Rock
The Hunger (another Catherine Deneuve film. it's sooooo 80s and so fantastic)
Thelma & Louise
The Others
The Parent Trap (1998 version. Natasha Richardson's wardrobe is very chic and beautiful)
The Red Shoes
The Sound of Music
Trois couleurs: Bleu
Unfaithful (something about Diane Lane's relaxed and classic wardrobe in this film gets me)
W.E. (a new favourite of mine)

that's more than enough.

^Oh! I loved the clothes that Natasha Richardson's character wore in Parent Trap. They were so elegant and I remember realizing that, even as a young child. And of course, who could forget the wedding dress shop scene? One of the highlights of that film!^_^

I was watching Melancholia awhile ago and Charlotte Gainsbourg's style in the film is impeccable. She even had a PS1 satchel in a couple scenes. Loved it!

Russian Romance

Russia's old world to me is a deeply atmospheric place, full of passion and romance. And, of course, at her heart stands St Petersburg - majestic, elegant and beautiful.

Having recently watched the new version of Anna Karenina, I was moved to create this video which shows St Petersburg as the perfect setting for the love stories of two great Russian writers Count Leo Tolstoy and Alexander Pushkin. The love stories of Anna Karenina and Onegin are both deeply moving and, as with many love stories, tragic too.

But as well as the romance of the people is the captivating and often breathtaking beauty of the natural settings, costume, architecture and interiors. Old world Russia - a country to inspire writers, musicians, choreographers and architects. An aesthete's paradise.

wow I just saw Dial M for Murder and Grace Kelly's wardrobe was PERFECTION!!! The red dress, the night gown, the gray dress, the brown coat EVERYTHING and all of the men also were dressed to perfection, loved every bit of it

Any recommendations from the late 90s?

I was trying to find some late 1990's but I couldn't think of any.
Of course my favourite 90's fashion movie is Clueless. (1995) Pretty Woman is I think, 1990.

There are a lot of Fashionable 1990's television shows:
Twin Peaks (1990-1991) but Joan Chen's wardrobe in this movie is to die for. I've only discovered this recently.
My So Called Life for Grunge
Sex and the City vintage for the first 2 seasons, designer for the last 4
Hilary Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air for Beverly Hills Princess
Rachel Green on Friends
Grace on Will and Grace in the early seasons is cute
Tea Leoni's character on The Naked Truth
if you want to see some ultimate 90's fashion check out Blossom  It's quintessential

Movies - Some stylish icons:

2001 - Margot Tenenbaum in The Royal Tenenbaums
2002 - The character that Amanda Peet plays in Igby Goes Down
2003 - The character that Kate Hudson plays in Le Divorce

The chunky brown knee-high boots in the opening of The Devil Wears Prada always drive me crazy.

Just going through the thread again somebody mentioned A Perfect Murder (1998). I've always been a fan of that movie and Gwyneth is super chic.

Not many people know about the film Love and Other Disasters (2006).
It stars Brittany Murphy, and she just lives in London and works in the fashion industry and dates hot guys! You can't go wrong!

Here's the trailer

I'm sorry that I have several posts in a row but there's no way out of it. As I keep researching Fashion in Film I keep coming up with more answers, and TFS only allows 10 minutes to edit your last post.

Late 1990's
You could try Cruel Intentions (1999) or a personal favourite of mine, Picture Perfect (1997) starring Jennifer Aniston. A great movie.

I know there are more, but I have to get ready to go out for new year's eve and now I have too many inspirations! :P

ANNIE HALL (MANY ALLEN CHARACTERS HAVE GREAT WARDROBES, VICKY CHRISTINA BARCELONA, MATCH POINT, PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM, ETC...)
REAR WINDOW (& MOST HITCHCOCK BLONDES – VERTIGO, BIRDS, ETC)
CRACKS – EVA GREEN IS BREATH-TAKING
LOST IN TRANSLATION (& REALLY ALL OF SOFIA’S FILMS)
I AM LOVE
ROSEMARY’S BABY
SHOPGIRL
AMELIE
OUT OF AFRICA
FAR FROM HEAVEN
FIGHT CLUB – ESP HELENA
SABRINA
THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY
GOSFORD PARK
THE LAST SEDUCTION
THE CONFORMIST
THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS (AND MOST ANDERSON FILMS)
THE BREAKFAST CLUB
VALLEY GIRL
HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONARE – ESP. LAUREN BACALL

you know another film with great costumes was beetlejuice. or more specifically winona ryder's character 'lydia'. that black petticoat she wore underneath her school uniform....her big floppy hat with the lace veil.....that monochrome red dress....stuff of dreams. catherine o'hara's character also had some really interesting looks. remember that head-piece she wore made from a leather glove?

True, and I should add Tim Burton to my list for costumes/movie wardrobes. He's had some stunners: Johnny Depp's first outfit as Edward Scissorhands is amazing, Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd, etc.
