zasu pitts:
i just saw her in erich von stroheim´s "greed".an impressive silent film that witnesses (with brutal honesty) the decomposition of humanity while material possession becomes an obsession and money the only love of your life.
zasu pitts was a great actress.one of the few who can make you laugh and cry at thze same time...
i love her huge eyes, her enchanting weirdness.she reminds me of lillian gish a bit:mental strength and tenacity hidden behind physical fragility  .

thanks for bringing up zasu pitts somnambule. :flower: those fineswung lips and those eyes! i like the way you described her, it makes me want to see her films so bad.. maybe i can get hold of greed sometime.

(may i ask where you get to see all those rarely screened silent movies? i hardly ever manage to attend the screenings of silent movies in my area (i don't have a TV set.) i should use post its or something like that.. use this thread as a constant reminder.. lol.

this is the next movie i want to see. although that subtitle is..)

i'm going to apply for a work experience in a film institute on monday (if i can take heart to do so. wish me luck, please..)

northernsky, you should DEFINITELY see "asphalt".don´t let yourself get distracted by the description  .it´s a great film.it´s one of my favourite german silent films even though it´s not as famous as nosferatu, pandora´s box or metropolis.betty amann is alluring and everybody who loves the fashion of this era is going to celebrate a feast while watching this movie.
i dón´t know if you receive ´"arte".it´s a french-german channel which shows silent movies every now and then.they normally don´t show the american "blockbusters" of the time though, but lesser known european productions.however,"greed" was shown on arte last week.since the film is more than 4 hours long (originally 8!!! hours) they divided it in 2 parts (i forgot to record the first part ).otherwise i bought a lot of silent film -videos and dvds from the german, french, british and american amazon-sites.ebay is a good source as well, even though you have to be careful regarding the quality of the videos and dvds you receive.some sellers sell cheap and bad copies and not originals.the shipping-costs from the US are rather high too but normally you don´t have to spend a fortune.i hope you´ll be able to find a good offer for ashpalt somewhere....and good luck for the job,too :flower: !!

btw, orchide, where are you :( ??!i hope you´ll return to this thread sooner or later .

cheiby´s post reminded me of:
anny ondra,
who was born in poland and first became famous in czechoslovacian silent films.she went to germany during the 20´s where she continued her carreer.her most famous film is hitchcock´s "blackmail".it was first shot as a silent film but after it was completed they decided to reshoot it as a talkie.anny ondra´s voice was dubbed because allegedly her czech accent was too strong.judging from the sound tests on the dvd i would have preferred anny´s own voice a million times, since the voice they used is horribly annoying :innocent:.

pictures from ebay, except for one...can´t remember where i found it though .

I know her!!!

She was born on 15 May 1903 in Polland (Tarnów)
But Anny Ondra was her assumed name for English movies...
Her original name was Anny Ondrakova, her husband was World Champion in box Max Schmeling...
She was succesful in the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany and England (she worked with Hitchcock)

She was really sweet and cute :)
