thank you for posting luxury's lap. ebay.com seems to be a great source. i hardly dare to look in there, i could be tempted to buy all those photographies. :)

i wonder what people buy those pictures.. someone told me about marcel proust's obsession with photography once, and it made me laugh so hard (how it was told, mainly). he lay in bed all day and looked at the photos he had bought from other people. but i always thought it was a nice thing to do in order to pass your time. i love him anyway.

So, I was looking around eBay for more photos, when I happened upon a very cool photo from a movie "The Devil Dancer" (1927). I search for more, I find a few more, but then I read this on imdb.com: THE DEVIL DANCER was highly praised at time of release for its exquisite cinematography, especially in the use of light and shadow. The film received an Academy Award nomination in this category. Sadly, it is among the lost. No prints or negatives are known to survive. That's so sad! No one can every see this movie! But here's the photos (sites in file names).

oh, i know what you mean. i mustn't think about all those lost films, too.

btw. that 'lulu' stencil is really cute. and it looks good on the guy in the pic. ^_^

just a pic i happen to like (from www.silentladies.com) to bump the thread.
it's buddy rogers and a (to me) unknown woman.

Some more Greta from "Camille" (source:ebay). Fourth pic is from http://www.gonemovies.com/

This is one of the most beautiful dresses I've ever seen. It's so perfect and exaggerated. Check out the smile Greta sports there, you can be pretty sure she didn't have that wide smile any time during the movie....there she's just mock-suffering all through the movie. So hilarious!

Do you know the year in which those pictures were taken?

the first pic is from 1947 ("duel in the sun") and the second one is from 1955 ("night of the hunter") that means they show her.. 54 and 62 years old.

i love the second pic you posted. even in that pic she manages not to look too sweet. i think she always looked classy instead of cute. that's what i like about her. (not, that i would prefer classy over cute in any case, but this elegance of hers just seems to be so very characteristic of her.)

The beauty director of ElleGirl must love the twenties, because they always seem to run editorials based on silent screen stars. Here's what I've scanned:

thank you for posting. those looks are really fascinating if you compare them to the originals.

i know the picture is a little morbid but look at her lips.. i thought joan crawford always had really full lips, didn't she? so did they paint fuller lips like that in the 20s to disguise them, or is it just the pic?

two pictures of colleen moore and clara bow that haven't been posted yet, as far as i can see. (sorry if i overlooked them. )

alice calhoun; florence eldridge; june collyer; leatrice loy; louise lorraine.

oh, i didn't know edward steichen took so many 'fashionable' photographies back then. i excluded all those stylish socialites, princesses and models (oh those delicate vintage gowns..) but that was a hard thing to do. so only actresses.

helen menken.

claudette colbert; dorothy gish; edythe baker; eleonor boardman; frances howard.

^ Those are great :woot:

Wish I could give you karma :(

thank you. oh well, i guess i'll just keep them coming so you can karma me another time. ^_^
