ah,alice white-that reminds me of something:innocent:...le film dec.1928.that´s the last page of the magazine.miss white before she turned blonde obviously.she could never compete with miss bow anyway.but she´s quite flappery/flapperish umh^_^.

2 pics of pola negri and the rest of lya de putti,an unusual and above all tragic actress...scanned by me

the lovely miss pickford, probably one of the most important women during the silent film era.she had such a childlike, soft appearance yet she was a tough business woman too.she was the first woman/actress to (co-)found an own film company.

this is beginning to look like a monolgue i suppose.i hope there´s still someone else interested in this thread besides me .
a little tribute to the italian silent film actresses.the most famous and popular actresses were francesca bertini and lyda borelli.they´re also the only ones i´ve seen on the screen-bertini in "assunta spina" from 1914 and lyda borelli in "rapsodia satanica" 1917.their acting style was still very theatrical.especially lyda borelli was drama personified, she was moving through the film like an expressionist dancer.francesca bertini on the other hand seemed more "earthy",warm and passionate to me.
1 pic is a pc of francesca bertini
the others:la bertini e le dive del cinema muto by pietro bianchi
(i have to mention that the paper dolls from mary pickford above stem from photoplay june 1919)

somnambule
you're doing an amazing job
thankyou very much  i like to regularly check your posts

civilization,finally:woot:!!!thanks for answering ednafrau,paradeyes and gbart:heart:!
ednafrau,i know what you mean (btw, loved your clara bow scans).that´s why this thread was always so delightful.meeting like-minded people.sharing pictures ,discussing films and letting your soul dance charleston while doing so.a bobbed oasis in a our much too modern times.this thread doesn´t seem to be as popular as it was a while ago though.many people who came here regularly seem to have gone away :(.there´s still so much to see adn learn and wonder and so much more powder to spread.may this thread continue to shine like a diamond as big as the ritz.since my scanner lies in bed with a nervous breakdown due to overwork,i´ll give him (and me) a little rest and post some pics later.

It's really an amazing glimpse into a world of strangely elegant and powerful personalities. :flower:

somnambule  looking forward to seeing more of your precious posts !

There was this actress who was from the 20's (I'm hoping) that I used to have as my avatar, but I've forgotten her name...maybe by her description (very odd, diamond shaped platinum frizzy hair) someone could remember her? She had such an odd quirky eccentricity about her...going to enjoy this thread later. Love the look of photography at this time, and the actresses.

oMg soo much beauty in this thread!
i'm in heaven

pic of the cute bebe daniels

lady stardust,i share your feelings.i´m all hotsy-totsy now :woot:

marion davies-her lover randolph hearst always wanted to see her in big dramatic parts.these films were flops most of the time but she could also prove herself as a great comedienne-in show people for example.she´s really enchanting in this small film

colleen moore before she bobbed her hair and became a flapper heroine...

maria jacobini

italia almirante, also one of the greats

and of course francesca bertini:

-----------------------

greta nissen,
the norwegian actress who played jean harlow´s role in hell´s angels´ silent version and was then replaced when they started reshooting the film because of her strong accent-jean harlow´s big chance

lady stardust´s beautiful pic reminded me of -bebe daniels
so soft and vulnerable

lya de putti :innocent:
237731.008lyadeputti_rpk.jpg

agnes ayres,beautiful like a pre-raphaelite painting.
her most famous film was probably "the sheik"..at least that´s the only one i´ve seen her in.first she gets kidnapped by the sheik and detained in an oasis in the desert, she even tries to flee, but then, how else could it be when the sheik himself is called rudolph valentino falls madly in love with him ...

sources:motion picture classic sept 1922,la bertini e le dive del cinema muto by pietro bianchi, pcs.
scanned by me...it´s definitely enough for now..

asta nielsen, who was one of those who made silents golden-an own art form.her pantomime was so expressive that spoken words weren´t necessary or would have even destroyed her intensity-perhaps comparable to charlie chaplin.i saw her in a very free adaption of hamlet,a german production from 1920.she played a female hamlet who had to hide his femininity in order to become a prince.it´s a very early and interesting study in gender-roles..

246942.386astanielsen_pc.jpg

i´m pretty sure that this pc must be from the 20s :heart:!!

246951.072brigittehelm_pc1.jpg

and lya de putti, once more.i finally got the chance to see one of her films-variete.her biographer described it as her best film and it IS a great film.i was even more impressed by her than i would have expected(knowing her only from postcards and photos before)this pc shows her in a leotard she was wearing in variete as a trapeze artist

246959.897lyadeputti_pk6.jpg

bebe daniels
246962.595bebedaniels_pc.jpg

colette brettel, she started her carreer in 1920 with wuthering heights.it´s the first film adaption of the novel and i think the only silent film version.i would really love to see it but couldn´t find it anywhere...
246963.442colettebrettel.jpg

and some flapper allure
lilli flohr-an austrian actress.i don´t know much about her...but i like the flapper appeal...
246967.204lilliflohr.jpg

the iconic flapper image
colleen moore
246969.142colleenmoore.jpg

elizza la porta, she had a short carreer in germany at the end of the silent film era.i saw her in "the student of prague"..she looks a bit vamp-ish on this pc ,from what i could see of her features(and i didn´t see much, since the quailty of the dvd is hideous) she looked rather soft and romantic in the film.
246972.829elizzalaporta.jpg

gerda maurus, fritz lang got aware of her and gave her leading roles in his films "spione" and "die frau im mond".he even fell in love with her and left his wife.she was famous for her intense eyes and high cheekbones.later goebbels became one of her admirers:unsure:.
246974.086gerdamaurus_pk1.jpg

fern andra,i have posted a pc of her in the 10s thread.this postcard seems to be from the early 20s..
246979.244fernandra_pk2.jpg

betty compson.i saw her in sternberg´s great film "the docks of new york" in which she had already started to dye her hair blond.
