20: Don't Look Now and Other Stories by Daphne du Maurier

The short story which formed the basis of the film, plus four other tales of mystery and human misfortune.

21: Blood From A Stone by Donna Leon

Venetian detective Guido Brunetti investigates the murder of an African street-seller, which leads him into a world of blood diamonds and government suppression.

I really enjoyed Tomorrow When The War Began by John Marsden, and the series that followed. It's the story of a group of Australian teenagers who "go bush" for the weekend and return to find that the country has been invaded. It's very interesting and covers a lot of teenage issues that was pretty handy during high school  It's also very well written for a YA book. I love John Marsden.

I totally agree. John Marsden is a great writer, probably my favourite really. I think I read the TWWB series at least three times when I was in highschool!
His other books are good, too: So Much to Tell You is one of my favourites as well.

tigerrouge, i started "rebecca" by daphne de maurier a week ago but couldnt get through the first couple pages. the writing seemed a little dated. did you read that one as well?

i think i'm going to list all the books in here that ive read and just tally them up at the end up the year. :D

The problem I had with Rebecca was that I kept remembering the film all the way through reading it, and seeing that in my head instead of imagining for myself what was being evoked by the writing!

I found that with the short stories, they're about 50-60 pages apiece, so if you're not so keen on the sound of one tale, you don't have long to go before you get into another. But the 'short story' form can be a strange thing, capturing a moment rather than constructing a world, so they often don't make much 'sense', and if you don't like the tone of someone's writing, you'll possibly like them even less in that format.

01: American Subversive by David Goodwillie
02: The Collector by John Fowles
03: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
04: Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank
05: The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton
06: The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis
07: Z for Zachariah by Robert C. O'Brien
08: The Forest Of Hands & Teeth by Carrie Ryan
09: The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
10: The Odyssey by Homer
11: The Dead Tossed Waves by Carrie Ryan

12: The Woman In Black by Susan Hill
13: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

22: The Woman in the Dunes by Kobo Abe

Got a couple of books by this Japanese author from the library the other day - and I found that there are also film versions of both of them, so that's something I'm going to explore after I finish the second.

First thoughts on Sweet Valley Confidential - :ninja:

23: The Face of Another by Kobo Abe

Because it's presented in the form of the written thoughts of a disfigured man who decides to wear a mask, the novel is quite introverted in nature, and while it raises a variety of ideas about identity and how we interact with each other, I ultimately found it rather unsatisfying, as if the plot was merely there to act as a convenient vehicle for the presentation of abstract thoughts, rather than properly taking on life as an interesting storyline in itself.
