50 Book Challenge for 2011

I'm in! I have big piles of books in my room that I've been meaning to read. I love reading though, I'm a literature student after all...

Well so far it's about nothing...but this is a internet summary:

A young American Jew, named Jonathan Safran Foer, journeys to Ukraine in search of Augustine, the woman who saved his grandfather's life during the Nazi liquidation of Trachimbrod, his family shtetl. Armed with many copies of an old photograph of Augustine and his grandfather, maps, and cigarettes, Jonathan begins his adventure with Ukrainian native and soon-to-be good friend, Alexander "Alex" Perchov, who is Foer's age and very fond of American pop culture, albeit culture that is already out of date in the United States. Alex has studied English at his university and is "premium" in his knowledge of the language, therefore he becomes the translator. Alex's "blind" grandfather and his "deranged seeing-eye b*tch," Sammy Davis, Jr., Jr., accompany them on their journey. These three parts tie together in the end of the story. Throughout the book, the meaning of love is deeply examined.

The loose language makes it hard to read for me but I guess it's a good book it also won some awards. Also bought the English edition of his book "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" about 9/11 and my sister owns the German edition of "Eating Animals" but I don't want to read that because I'm sure I would become vegetarian for a while but maybe I will to reach my 50 B).

ETA: Aqua Tofana's post, I didn't know that there is a movie but I think they are filming a new one about his second book. Thanks about that information :).
I have read eating animals. but i am vegetarian. it is a good book tho.

I would love to read reviews of books , what I find the hardest is not really dedicating time for reading but finding the right material that keeps me interested through the very end.. it'd be nice knowing what others are reading and what they thought of it.. just so one can get 'inspired' (aka. finding that specific book and reading it too :innocent:).

Can we also please count unfinished books with more than 100 pages left?, because I just picked up on one of Jodorowsky's books that I've been trying to finish for a million years and I'm on page 125.. of 600-something :ninja:.. first part of the challenge, I should be done by January 8th. :ninja::ninja:

The idea is to make review for every book, counting them. Like this:

Book #15: Book name
review-blah-blah-blah

You can post several reviews together. The challenge is not just to read like hell, but for book lovers. So the idea is to share.. ideas xD

@Lola Montès, it's not off topic. It's interesting to read different comments. There're another threads for big discussions, but this doesn't mean that opinions are forbidden here. :)

@MulletProof, 125 of 600 really doesn't count. It's not even a half. But even if you are on 350 p., this doesn't count. Only whole books. Otherwise where's the point of reading and making reviews?

Please count me in.
I mostly read romances (nearly all sub-genres), YA, UF and some chick-lit.

Right now I'm reading "Her Royal Spyness" by Rhys Bowen.

Just found this thread and I think its a wonderful idea, its a great challenge with great rewards and we all help motivate eachother, and also get great reviews from eachother. Im definitely in and im going to use set up the sig that Toccata created.

There are other types of books besides fiction that will help you keep pace with a book a week:

-Plays are usually around 50 to 150 pages so they can be read in a few hours or a few short sittings and they're much faster paced and dramatic.

-Biographies or Histories can be inspiring!

-Self-Help, Philosophy & Science books are engaging because they are practical which could be life-altering.
I think if someone posted a review about a really interesting book they said made them think and feel differently I'd read it too.

^Great read, ive always wanted to read the classics so maybe finally this will be my year. Also Ive always wanted to read Bukowski and my brother has so many of his books so im going to start with one of those, probably Pulp or CHoke.

Ooh, I love Bukowski! I have read 'Women' and 'Post Office'... I will read 'Ham on Rye' soon also.

Brilliant idea! I'm in! :woot:

Currently reading J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. At least I'm trying to, so this thread will motivate me to finish all the half-read books that lay around. :ninja:

^ You can do it! Plus its Harry Potter, so whats not to love? They are fantastic books... :)

LoL, I know. I'm re-reading it cause of the movies. And I did a quick inventory, I have 17 other half-read books laying around.

I don't think I explained myself properly (I was too tired last night).. I meant.. can we pick up on books that we started not necessarily in 2011 (maybe years before), but never finished (and we're not even halfway through and there are more than 100 pages left), and once finished, can they count for the challenge??. Does it make sense now? sorry about that. (e.g. I started the 600-pages Jodorowsky book in 2009 but dropped it on page 100.. I picked it up again and am *hoping* to be done by Jan. 8.. when I'm done (if I make it), does it count?).

i like the suggestion of reading unfinished books when you have still more than 100 pages to go... the book i'm currently reading, i'm only about half way through and still 150 pages to go, i don't think i'll have finished it by new year's day! :p

Great idea to start at tFS! I'm reading my 53th book and have to attest that the challenge provides hell lot of motivation for me to read more. I'm continuing the challenge next year. Not a great reviewer but will definitely check back for book recommendations.
