A Tribute to the 90s Supermodels

I know I'm late, but I finally made my way through the entire thread. Awesome photos! :flower: Thanks everyone that contributed. I must concede that earlier eras of modeling had better models and covers IMO.

Favs: Linda, Christy, Naomi  Lana is a doll; Helena is beautiful and Yasmeen is regal. :woot: I also liked Brandi and Beverly.

I'm sorry, but I don't see what the big deal was about Claudia. She was trash.

Anyway, carry on! :p

that's your opinion  , but don't say she was trash, she was the number #1 in her time, I don't like your fave models like Brandi or Beverly but I don't say they're trash, Lana?, Lana who?

Whoa, Bud-dy. I'm sure Sepia doesn't mean she was trash personally, just work wise. She isn't the only person with that view, BTW it's just her opinion. Sure Claudia was one of the top girls, many attribute that to her being white-blond,etc. Just look at Christie B she wasn't the greatest model either of her day but she had that 'white bread' look to get her places others couldn't get so easy. With that said I like Claudia as well as Brandi & Bev and even Lana. BTW I truly enjoy both you & Sepia.
Eveyone has favs and all models as well as people have flaws(hipswing, texastess, oolie coco). O.C Why did you single out the Trinity:innocent:;)? You know they are my favs. They are such great models, that they pulled off their flaws especially. And as a huge fan of Omi I will be the first to tell you she isn't perfect and I find it hilarious that you said that. The only girls that are in that vain-so plain that it bores is the VS girls like Tyra,Heidi, etc IMO.

Anyway, Let's keep this damn thing classy people:lol::flower::D;)!

Yes it is just opinions. But lets be more tactful. For example it sounds like you are calling her trash as a person and I'm sure(or at least hope) that's not what you mean. In your eyes she wasn't as special as her fellow Elite Supers and that's okay. BTW the Elite Supers need more than a few bad reviews to overshadow what they have done, they will last as they have been for so long, so let's not get so personal(it will take alot to get rid of the Elites especially Cindy,Christy,Naomi & Linda). They have proven themselves. BTW this essay(sorry I had to do it) isn't just about whats been said on this thread recently. I've seen some ridiculous hate & jealousy and I'm hear to say get used to the Supers(especially the Elites) b/c they are going to be around.

Kristen McMenamy about 1993 photographed by Demarchelier. She would defy the beauty odds in the 90s and would become more popular than when she conformed in the 80s. She was described as many things lookwise the nicest of the remarks was 'beautiful freak' but I think she is a great model.

its cool its all opinions and IMO all these girls had something special, i like them all...i define supermodel as the models that got vogue covers, did runway and print for the top designers in milan, paris and new york, got high profile campaigns and contracts, were hired again and again every season until they retired, were allowed to age and have their careers longer than the usual 2 year modelling contract with agencies,

i think there is a big difference between being a 'supermodel' in the fashion world and being a supermodel in the media world, the models that acted, made fitness videos, sang, wrote books, presented etc outside of the modelling world raised their profiles and turned themselves into celebrities and 'supermodels' in media but as far as the fashion world the supermodel group was wider and embraced more girls than the narrow view of the media, i don't consider elle a supermodel, i can't find a vogue cover or high fashion layout she did in the early 90s, no runway pictures from milan or paris, did gianni or karl ever hire her i don't recall ever seeing her in their shows?? she definately is a media supermodel not a fashion supermodel, i'm with gianni and karl on this, the girls they embraced from 1990-93 are my supermodels too

i know as a photographer/designer i would have liked to work with the early 90s supermodels linda, christy, naomi, cindy, stephanie, claudia, helena, yasmeen, karen, nadja, eva, kate, kristen, meghan, nadege, amber, shalom but my favourite year was 1991 so i would have loved to work with these trios the most the trinity...linda, christy, naomi and another amazing trio of helena, yasmeen and karen but its all good they all got my love :)

my girls...

eva when she had curves before some idiots in the fashion business told her to lose weight to get more work, i'll make them pay i tells ya!! eva be strong don't listen to these harmful critical fools of the fashion business they are so superficial, be healthy your curves are alright with me

sweet naomi she broke down many doors but look at where we are now, there aren't many black models used in shows and campaigns, has the fashion world really moved on?? keep doing what you do!!

The Trinity rules period and they could do it all and worked with them all. About Elle, I agree in thinking the same way you do of most girls including Tyra,Heidi and most of the VS girls. Elle did get a few Vogues mostly Aussie(b/c she was their 1st big model) and recently a UK. But the same could be said of the Tyra's,Heidi's ect they got/get some fashion but it's in weird countries and not alot to count.

Again they aren't going to like but a few in. She is Naomi and she went beyond and it had nothing to do with race. She is the first colorless model. The other girls are just going to have to work harder and be smarter. She can't do the work for them, she only can show what can be done. I still love seeing her get covers and working for the like of Dior,Anna Sui,Valentino, etc and being in music videos. Since she still is visable I don't think another will become prominent, but she still reps. Liya is close, but she still isn't Naomi. No one is and still will keep on keeping on!

i agree that it went beyond race but the fashion world should represent all kinds of races so they appeal to people of colour of the world so they can see their race as being 'beautiful', its important that black, white, ethnic, exotic are all seen as beautiful its getting quite narrow now than it did in the early 90s, the look is all about being young, no curves and i don't know how women over the age of 20 can identify with girls like gemma ward, don't get me wrong i like gemma and understand her beauty but there needs to be a better balance and womanly models should be used too, when kate the anti supermodel supermodel came she repesented what gemma did but curvy girls like helena and eva were still being used, the fashion world is so fickle it can get quite dangerous these very thin girls but the fashion world is clueless they only look on the surface
