TV viewers terrified by Swedish supermodel

A commercial for Apoliva, an assortment of personal care products for Apotoket, featuring Swedish supermodel Adina Fohlin has made a major splash, although not quite the one that the Swedish pharmacy chain was hoping for. Rather than running out to purchase Apoliva products, viewers are running scared.

The 30-second ad spot, set to the haunting tones of a Swedish folk song, depicts a close-up of a rather sullen and emaciated Fohlin standing in the snow, rain and sun. The clip ends with the tagline, “Apoliva – for Swedish conditions”.

Almost 100,000 Swedes, many of whom viewed the clip on YouTube, have joined a Facegroup group called “I am scared of the girl in the Apoliva commercial” (“Jag är rädd för tjejen i Apolivareklamen”) in reaction to the film. Several other related groups, both in favour of and against the ad, have popped up on the social media site as well.

The Facebook group was created by Swedish student Anders Hammas late one evening while he was studying. “That was when I saw this commercial that I thought was pretty horrible,” he told the Expressen newspaper.

The description of the Facebook group reads: “Those of us who have a TV and like to watch commercials/can't be bothered to reach for the remote are facing a problem. Apoliva has begun to run a commercial that is frightening. A woman singing a Nordic/Swedish folk song in freezing rain with lightning. I am creating this group for those of us who need somewhere to seek support and talk things out. It's only a matter of time before it creeps into our dreams and terrorises us in our sleep.”

“We definitely weren't prepared for this reaction,” Eva Fernvall, brand manager at Apoteket AB, told Expressen.

“It was never our intention to scare people,” she added.

Leif Sorte, project manager for the commercial at Forsman & Bodenfors, the advertising agency behind the film, said they always hope to draw attention, but the debate surrounding the commercial has been entirely unexpected. He remains positive despite the uproar. “We think it's fantastic that there have been so many reactions,” he told newspaper Göteborgs-Posten.

"We wanted to dare to do something different in the cosmetics genre where many thinks look the same, and highlight the Swedish weather and how it influences skin and hair," Sorte said.

Folhlin's agency, Mikas, told Expressen that the model hasn't taken the criticism personally and that she was just playing a role in a commercial.

I think it's kind of cool and innovative.

 thanks LUXXX,i needed that. frightening?? that's frightening?!!! hehe god, that's aeons better than the commercials we get in america.

She looks scarier in the picture that accompanies the article, than in the commercial.

No offense to Adina, but her gaze is definitely intense. However, I think in the case of this commercial, the fear was mostly atmospheric... and people are awfully sensitive... -_-

I see why people could be scared but this commercial was sort of boring and only good to fall asleep.

Poor Adina I would be quite offended! Get out and tell them how much money you earned for your amazing look!

Mm, doesn't look that frightening. Heck, she doesn't even look emaciated either. I thought it would be something like Samara off of the Ring or something but wha??:lol:
I agree it could be the atmosphere and maybe the folk song she's singing has some cultural background that not many of know about but this was interesting :D

the smiling and then the sunshine part made it scary for me..

Adina looks beautiful. I love her and her beautiful singing voice.

Was it actually her singing or playback? Either way, I don't see the big fuss. Sure, she's not FHM-pretty, but she's made a lot of money off her look. It would definitely bring me into that chain of stores.

this is hilarious! although i don't think she's scary-looking at all.

i love how on facebook everyone can create the most random group.

^Right?

Okay maybe it appears to scare people who are brainwashed by the millions of disgustingly happy housewives who finally found the solution to their spot-issues, or unrealistic polluted floors.

It doesn't look scary at all,oh people so like drama.Poor Adina...

To me, the ads is very beautiful. And she is beautiful.

Somehow, with all these facebook group and all, it creates great publicity which I think will end being a good thing for the cosmetic company.

LOVE Adina. Yes she has an intense look, but it's not 'frightening'. Only thing about this that could be considered 'shocking' is when the lightning appears, but the guy who began this facebook group and all the people who joined it need to get a life. I hate people like this. :yuk:

And Adina has the last laugh....all the way to the bank. ^_^

This facebook group was created for a little humour, no? A bit tongue-in-cheek perhaps? You know those Swedes, always yucking it up!!!
den där er rolig

^ Apparently the group doesn't exist anymore ... atleast I can't find it ... there's a group called "All of us who think Adina Fohlin is Fantastic" & other with her name, nothing else.

The video is not scary at all, but that part where's really dark ... it might scare a 6 year old child.
