To expect a new designer to simply rehash what is in the archives is not only pompous and pretentious, but extremely stifling.

If your wish is for them to simply recreate and slightly update your past creations, then there is no point in retiring since the role of ''designer'' at your brand doesn't seem to require much work anyway.

Feud over founder's legacy led to dismissal of fashion house's top designer


Paris fashion week ended yesterday not in the usual welter of air kissing and champagne toasts, but with a potentially expensive bout of backstabbing which has surprised even hardened style watchers by the savagery displayed.

Less than 24 hours after the Valentino show, the company announced the departure of the label's creative director, Alessandra Facchinetti, following a "misaligned vision with the company". It added, with biting brevity: "Her creative contribution and refined artistic talent were greatly appreciated." Facchinetti had been in place for less than two seasons after the label's founder, Valentino Garavani, stepped down. What made this announcement particularly harsh was that Facchinetti was unaware she had been fired.

Two hours later, she issued her own statement, saying that she felt "deep regret" to have learnt that she was fired from the press "since the company's top management has not yet seen fit to inform me. I would like to thank Valentino SPA for showing their appreciation of my 'creative contribution and sophisticated talent' although I deeply regret the fact that this talent and contribution do not seem to have been adequately acknowledged."

Valentino's longtime business partner, Giancarlo Giammetti, soon stepped into the ring, expressing his approval of the removal of Facchinetti: "To pretend to transform and revolutionise the Valentino style is a utopia which is a loss from the start."

Valentino himself then joined the fray, complaining that Facchinetti had not sufficiently respected his legacy: "There is an existing archive with thousands of dresses where [a designer] can draw and take inspiration from to create a Valentino product that is relevant today. It is a shame that [Facchinetti] didn't feel this need."

This unusually public feud reveals the problems increasing numbers of big-name labels face when their founders reach retirement age but the business is too lucrative to close, reaping millions, even billions of dollars annually, albeit largely through cosmetics, underwear, sunglasses and jeans.

"It's an incredibly tricky balance for a young designer, and it's particularly tricky at Valentino where so much of the label's image was about Valentino's own extraordinarily glamorous life," said Vogue's fashion features editor, Harriet Quick.

"It's hard not to look at all this as nature's way of saying that, after a designer goes, you should shut the door. After all, nobody took over from Picasso when he died and you don't have David Lynch directing movies in Alfred Hitchcock's name. It does raise questions about what will happen at Ralph Lauren [who is 68] and Giorgio Armani [74] when they step down" said fashion writer Tim Blanks.

Today more money is involved than ever before and few would want to kill the cash cow of as established a name as Valentino. Moreover, customers already cautious about spending money in the luxury sector are drawn to labels with familiar names. "But how many people want something from a couture label that has not been shepherded by the designer himself?" asked Blanks.

There had been rumours of Facchinetti's departure all week. It is a far cry from how things seemed just a few months ago. After Faccinetti showed her first collection in February, Giametti expressed his delight, saying she "respected a master".

Valentino's complaints about Facchinetti's alleged lack of respect for his brand may reflect the designer's own bitterness after he was forced out in 2007 following the company's takeover by private equity firm Permira. But they also show the difficulty for young designers who try to take over at a label when the originator is still alive; Yves Saint Laurent made his displeasure known when Tom Ford stepped into his shoes in 1999, saying dismissively: "The poor guy does what he can."

What makes this latest row particularly bitter for Facchinetti is that she has been here before: in 2005 she was sacked from Gucci after just two seasons. Some suggest that part of her problem is the difficulty a young woman faces in the world of male-dominated big brands. Others say Facchinetti's sales had been disappointing. Either way, insiders say this high profile feud could leave the Valentino brand with a costly problem because magazines and department stores will be unsure how to promote Facchinetti's "lame duck" collections for the label.

"It seems a very unpleasant thing to do to a young female designer," Blanks said. "As for established labels taking on young designers, we're now looking at a chalice that is irrevocably poisoned."

i feel badly for Alessandra :cry:

But she's really stood with grace through all this. The chauvinism in the upper echelons of the fashion industry (ie. Valentino, Giammetti et al) must be so frustrating.
 
Regardless of the reason for letting her go, they should have had the decency and respect to inform her before the press. This is a level of disrespect that I would not have expected from the house of valentino. It's unbelievable!
 
I have to be honest ... I didn't like her SS09 collection at all because it didn't represent the spirit of Valentino designs. So I guess the company has made the right decision.
 
I also find it very very very hard to believe that Valentino couture has made any profit in some time. I'd have to see actual papers in front of me to believe that. The value of couture for houses in this day and age lies largely in PR -- that's it's covered in magazines like Glamour.

Anyway, I thought the story was that the clients stayed away in droves because Valentino didn't make the couture collection. So is it that they stayed away or that they showed up and Alessandra fobbed them off to someone else :huh:?

I just don't think they gave her enough time. She's a human being and a creative one at that not an Archives reproductive machine. There is always a rough period when new designers take over from old ones, especially in established houses. Look at how Tisci and Pilati started out at Givenchy and YSL.

you know what bothers me the most (more than the way alessandra was dismissed)?
if valentino wanted someone in the creative director position that was a "party man/woman," so to speak, then why didn't he start grooming someone while he was still there? he knew he was retiring at some point...
or if he wanted the pair of accessory designers to take the reigns, why didn't he say that?
honestly, it seemed like a big waste of alessandra's time to take the job if they didn't want her, or if their plan was to have her design for a few seasons then let her go...

I was really starting to love what she was doing for Valentino and after watching FW 08 HC video I almost had tears in my eyes that she was fired :cry:
 
I have to say that's I'm still as sad today about Alessandra being fired as the day I first heard it.

I've been watching her runway videos, listening to the soundtracks, looking at pictures, etc, and I've really grown to appreciate her work. I also went to the Valentino store in Beverly Hills just the other day because I wanted to see her work up close...it's all beautiful! Really just beautiful.

I'm also really disappointed in the lack of press this tragedy is receiving. You would think everyone would have some strong reaction to this catastrophe, but it seems they don't. I remember back when Rochas closed, there were articles everywhere about how horrible it was. And it wasn't just fashion magazines that covered the story, the NY Times Magazine had a lengthy article about it as well. It's disheartening, really, the complete lack of coverage regarding this debacle.

I'm just so tired of the revolving door syndrome to many houses seem to have these days. It's extremely damaging to a brand's identity. Not only does it confuse buyers and costumers, it, to quote Tim Blanks, "[poisons the chalice]." Clearly, by looking through this thread, there are many of us who have sworn off Valentino for good because of this and many of us no longer respect or even care for Valentino the man.

But more than anything, I'm devastated for Alessandra. Who will want to hire someone who has been fired twice. I'm sure many would consider her a risky investment and choose to pass on her. I'm incredibly sad that she's most like done for good with Haute Couture. What an opportunity! It was fantastic to finally have a woman back in Couture. Her perspective and her idea of Haute Couture was so refreshing and welcomed. The chances of her returning to Couture are so slim, and that breaks my heart, especially knowing that now a TEAM of ACCESSORY designers get to take her place in the world of Couture.

I really feel so heart broken about this whole episode...it's really a true tragedy.
 
What´s funny about this whole situation and Alessandra herself is that first at Gucci she was fired because her look was to similar to Ford´s and now, when in Valentino I felt and I heared her saying she was trying to do something different respecting the heritage (and I thought, good girl she´s learned from her previous experience) and now she is fired for not following the brand´s identity!!!

Unfortunatelly fashion design is a very unstable career, it is difficult since day one and it continues to be so until the end, just think of every major fashion designer trough history, how many of them have had flawless careers, whithout going up and down??, they are at least lucky because they had a chance to participate in this world many and I mean thousands would and can´t, just think on how many fashion students don´t even get a job and after all of those years of hard study don´t get a chance and had to switch careers or ambitions.

It is extremely difficult to make it in this field and Alessandra has many pluses to her, how many women designer do we know who had worked for two of the biggest fashion houses of the world??, she has been fired from both, so??, Alber Elbas first worked for Guy Laroche successfully, then moved to Ysl where he got fired after three seasons, then an Italian brand which I don´t recall its name now and then Lanvin, it goes up and down until you finally stablish for most.

I think that shout happen to her, the fashion crowd adore her, everybody knows she is very talented and refined and herself probably learned a lot once again at Valentino (we do not learn from success as uncle Karl says), so is probably up to time for us to hear from her again.
 
i wish there was news on what future job prospects or opportunities have come Alessandra's way.

hopefully there is something good out there for her :cry:
 
from what i see in the "celebs wearing runway looks" thread, Alessandra's take on Valentino is quite popular in Asia. and everyone knows that there's a lot of money there. oh well, their loss.

Ufff yes. It really is all unfortunate for her and I could see it if she was very horrible..... but that was not the case. :doh:

Valentino's take was popular already in Asia so it's really no comparison IMO.
