I do think this whole 'break' or hiatus, or whatever, from designing women's Prêt-à-Porter could just be a sinister game he played to generate some buzz and anxiety among his fans and loyal Gucci and YSL clients - to cash upon later.
Truth be told, I never believed that he would stop making women's clothes. He was just biding his time, and feeding the world that whole 'I am sick of this fickle world called fashion' BS he has been known to go by - at least for the past I don't know how many years. He wants to cash in obviously - he is a businessman. And he will come up with some capsule collectiion, at the very least, pretty soon. Followed by shoes and leather goods of course.
In some ways both Tom Ford the designer and Tom Ford the brand are trying hard to remain something elusive, but also potent and dominant in today's luxury design market. But he must know in his heart that it is impossible for him to be the next design emperor he clearly wants to be without working his magic in some feminine line of apparel. And Alessandra was his right hand through all his successes, as I understand.
If he creates clothing that resembled his FW 03 BladeRunner collection, or his farewell YSL, then trust me: he will have women going crazy -again and as to be expected- for every single item he puts forward. People say that 'the sexy' in fashion has been 'over' for some time now, but it is obvious that everyone still wishes to look their best when they pay that price: especially nowadays.
He will always be a somebody in fashion. And this financial crisis will end at some point. What will happen then? People will turn to seek the new stuff, with an opulent name recognition. Hence, Tom Ford. And both Anna and Carine will be there along the ride, won't they now?
Why keep all that away from potential new and devoted old clients?
