Who Is Denis O’Hare Playing on American Horror Story: Freak Show?

Denis O’Hare long ago wrapped his American Horror Story: Coven role as loyal manservant Spaulding, but he took home a notable memento. “I loved Spaulding ... and his dolls,” he told Vulture at last night’s opening of Of Mice and Men on Broadway. “I kept one. A little one. I can't talk about it. I think Ryan [Murphy] would let me go, for that.” Murphy also wouldn’t appreciate O’Hare doling out spoilers for the upcoming American Horror Story: Freak Show, but the actor was willing to oblige just a bit: While he spent last season gazing at Jessica Lange oh-so-lovingly, next season will find the pair at odds. “I’m going to be working at cross-purposes with her. We’re going to be like this,” he said, crossing his fingers. “We’ll have lots of scenes with each other, but we’ll be battling.” O’Hare said that the new character will be featured in all ten episodes (unlike the oft-missing Spaulding), and while he wouldn’t give away spoilers, he also let loose this one little tidbit about his character’s place in the season: Instead of playing a freak himself, the character will be “a collector of freaks.” A man after Ryan Murphy’s own heart.

I love any character O'Hare plays, so far this sounds great, I like that he is at odds with Jessica's character

Sarah Paulson announces her role in the upcoming AHS season 4.

It's been a long, anxious and speculative wait to find out more details on "American Horror Story" Season 4, subtitled "Freak Show."

The wait is officially over now that we know who Sarah Paulson, aka our favorite Supreme, will be playing when she returns for Ryan Murphy's horror show next season. On Thursday, May 12, Paulson announced her character by tweeting a photo of herself with two heads, who are apparently Bette and Dot.

So excited to be playing Bette AND Dot this season. Two heads are better than one! #AHSFREAKSHOW pic.twitter.com/jdZJSPercn
— Sarah Paulson (@MsSarahPaulson) June 12, 2014
Two Sarah Paulsons are definitely better than one. In an interview with E! News earlier this week, Paulson said that her reaction to reading the first script was two words: "Holy ****!" The actress described the fourth season as a hybrid between the previous two "AHS" seasons, "Coven" and "Asylum." "There's going to be a little bit of a richer and potentially darker tone the way 'Asylum' had, but with the humor infused from 'Coven,'" Paulson said.

What we know so far about "Freak Show" is that it will be set in Jupiter, Florida in the 1950s, that Jessica Lange will play a German ex-pat running a carnival, Denis O'Hare will play her rival collector of freaks, and Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Evan Peters, Frances Conroy and other "AHS" favorites are also expected to return. Hopefully more characters are revealed soon -- we're really hoping a relative of Season 2's pinhead Pepper shows up.

^i'd love to see naomi grossman in some kind of incarnation make a return as well. anyway, looks interesting....sarah playing conjoined twins which doesn't surprise me since conjoined twins were often part of circus side-shows. interesting the choice of jupiter being the setting.....gibsonton florida a town which is in the vicinity of tampa is famous for actually being the home of sideshows. i can see why he would retain that as its setting even if in a completely different town.

Does Jessica always get nominated for AHS for the Emmys?

Coven was such a mess, I wonder if the nomination committee even bothered to watched it, or they're just going by who's in it-- much the same way the Academy always nominates Meryl for anything she's in.

If anyone was worthy of a nomination for holding this mess together it should have been Francis Conroy. She stole every single scene she was in, and doing it so effortlessly. Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett and even Emma Roberts were fun to watch and made a more memorable impression on me than Jessica and Sarah did. I can't even remember Jessica and Sarah's performances much this time around.

If Coven deserves any nomination-- even deserving of winning anything, it should be for the stylish, elegant but spooky campaign. That was truly stellar.

Oh well, hoping the sideshow freaks impress, unlike the witches!

I agree with you wholeheartedly. and yes jessica has been nominated every year since murder house. kathy bates, frances conroy and angela bassett have actually all nominated in the supporting category so at least there is some redemption there. but other than that, the nominations this year is just odd and the favouritism, horrendously transparent. as much as i adore jessica and sarah paulson,i was underwhelmed by their performances last season compared to the supporting actresses. i just wonder if they were throwing a bone to jessica(not that she really needs one,of course but you know academy politics...)because this was her final full season working on AHS??

Thanks Aque: Kind of reminds me of REM's "Losing My Religion" video...

Coven's campaign remains the best so far. That combination of Grimm's fairy tale-esque creepiness with a dose of Tom Ford/ Saint Laurent smoldering sexiness worked wonderfully for me. The image of the snake intertwining and coming out of the (YSL-red) mouths of women was sexy, fun and disturbing. But the one that got to me was the image of girls suspended in the air facing the walls of a bright, white room: Jesus Christ, witch-burnings, possession, Giorgio de Chirico all rolled into a sleek ad... and nothing gets under my skin more than the calm before the storm-- which is the feeling I get with that image.

Oh yes, that's right Scott: Jessica won't be part of AHS anymore. Yeah-- I guess the nomination was more of a farewell nod then. I wonder if that's a foreshadowing of the new season if Jessica opted to leave...?

You know, I must be the only one that enjoyed Gabourey in Coven. Yes, she's an actress of limited abilities, but her combination of tough, vulnerable, awkward, and insecure demeanor worked for her character. And she does have a presence. For me, at least.

no i agree she does have a real presence about her but too often she gets typecast as the same mouthy character every role she does.

'American Horror Story' Leaked Call Sheet Signals Possible Return Of A Past Character

While we know a handful of details about Season 4 of "American Horror Story," there are still a lot of things left to speculation.

What we do officially know so far is that "Freak Show" will take place in 1950s Florida at one of the last American freak carnivals, run by a German ex-pat (Jessica Lange). We also know that Sarah Paulson will play a two-headed woman, Dot and Bette. According to a leaked call sheet however, a familiar "AHS" face will appear in the new season.

Remember Pepper, the microcephalic woman played by Naomi Grossman in "Asylum"? Apparently, she's back for "Freak Show," according to an Argentinian fan site's unofficial leaked call sheet for the fourth season's first episode. It would make a lot of sense for Pepper to return as one of the freaks since she was inspired by the 1932 cult film "Freaks" and real sideshow performer Schlitzie. Since Season 4 takes place before the 1964-set "Asylum," it seems possible that it may reveal Pepper's origin story and how she ended up a Briarcliff. Two other actors listed below Grossman on the call sheet, Christopher Neiman as Salty (Salty and Pepper sound like a circus act duo to us) and Ben Woolf as Meep, both look similar and like their characters may be other microcephalics or related to Pepper.

Other big reveals in the call sheet are that John Carroll Lynch from "The Americans" and "Body of Proof" will play Twisted Clown, and Grace Gummer, who had a small part in "Coven," will play Penny the Candy Striper. According to the call sheet, Lange's character will be Elsa Mars, Kathy Bates will play Ethel Darling, and Evan Peter's will apparently play her son, Jimmy Darling.

HuffPost has reached out to FX and the actors' reps for comment. We can only hope that this call sheet is real since it has us even more pumped for Season 4.

I hope it has a similar vibe to HBO´s Carnivàle. Gotta renew my enthusiasm in AHS -_-

I hope it's real, I saw that the other day and allegedly Emma Roberts and Angela Roberts were not on set for the first episode shooting so it could fit since they are not on the call sheet. Actors 5-10 are missing, most likely Emma, Angela, Micheal and newly added Finn Wittrock.

Here are the links to the pics

(BTW do I have to cite links to pics? If so atrl but it would be nice to know for future reference)

How was that show btw? I've been looking for new shows to watch and it peaked my interest on HBOGO but I haven't given it a try, I've herd a lot about it since it was announced the 4th season of AHS would be Freak Show. I assume they push the boundaries a tad bit more since it was on HBO.

^I highly recommend Carnivale, it was one of those great shows that was very underrated...
It had supernatural elements which I´m hoping Freak Show will also have. I´m very interested in the cinematography as well, Carnivale was shot in very sepia tones... after seeing that pic of Paulson and the fact that is set on the 50s, what are the chances that some episodes would be shot in B&W? that would be great imo :)

it would be brilliant if it were akin to a combination of moving diane arbus and august sander images....they both made series of images on circus performers and sideshow acts.

'American Horror Story': First Look at 'Freak Show' Cast Art (Exclusive)

FX
Kathy Bates as the bearded lady. Michael Chiklis as the strong man. A two-headed Sarah Paulson. Sword eaters and oh so much more.

That's just a hint of what's to come, judging from The Hollywood Reporter's exclusive cast art for American Horror Story: Freak Show (below). This is the first look at what co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have in store for the upcoming fourth season of the FX anthology series.
Season four of the FX anthology starts in Florida, circa 1952, and centers on a "troupe of curiosities" that arrives at the same time that a dark entity emerges, threatening the lives of townsfolk and freaks alike. From the official description: "This is the story of the performers and their desperate journey of survival amid the dying world of the American carny experience."
Jessica Lange stars as Elsa Mars, a German expat managing one of the last remaining freak shows in the country. Emma Roberts is set as Maggie; Paulson is Bette and Dot Tattler; Bates is Effil Darling; Chiklis is Wendell Del Toredo; Angela Bassett is Desiree Dupree; and Evan Peters is Jimmy Darling. Frances Conroy and Gabourey Sidibe will also return to the cast, which includes newcomers Wes Bentley, Fargo's John Carroll Lynch as the central villain and The Normal Heart's Finn Wittrock as well as the world's smallest living woman, Jyoti Amge. Patti LaBelle will also appear in a four-episode arc, with Matt Bomer set for a guest stint.
"At every freak show, you have the tropes but there's some [that are] unique and weird," Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter about season four. "It's about something: It's about outcasts and how society at that time … true stories about circus performers who were cast aside. The story in many ways dovetails with Asylum, because they leave one era and you can see many of them in real life were put into asylums. There's a great symmetry we've come up with that's rewarding."
Judging from the official Freak Show hashtag, the series will explore the "freak" in all of us, as the German #WirSindAlleFreaks translates to "we are all freaks."
"It's darker than Coven; it feels very unique," Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter of Freak Show. "I directed the first one and I haven't done that since the very first one of season one. It feels like a Douglas Sirk movie; it's very 1952 presentational and then the horror is an unexpected jab. As opposed to last year, which was crazy camera work and comedy. This year feels different. The special-ability cast that we have is amazing and I feel so thrilled because for so many of them, it was their dream to be actors and they didn't have any opportunities. There's a great community. They feel part of something perhaps for the first time in their life and that's an amazing thing that I was really emotional about when I was directing them."
