“I’m not pregnant,” Amy Adams tells Vanity Fair contributor Nell Scovell in the January issue cover story, clarifying the details of her 11-year relationship with fiancé Darren Le Gallo and adding “I’m not getting married anytime soon.” The two have a three-and-a-half-year-old daughter. Of Le Gallo the Academy Award-nominated actress says, “I know he’s completely capable and lovely, and beautiful, and offers something I could never hope to offer just in the nature of his being.”
For American Hustle, David O. Russell’s upcoming film on 70s-era New Jersey mafia, Adams tells Scovell she cultivated a “hungry and tan” look, losing weight to attain a svelteness that she shows off while dancing in a white swimsuit. “Yeah, that’s terrifying. It’s amazing what a tan can do. Because I’m not tan, so that was fun to play with.” Adams says her slinky, bra-less wardrobe for the film required two things: confidence and “sort of a laissez-faire attitude about what your breasts are doing.”
Adams tells Scovell that she loves to sing, whether it’s for her daughter Aviana, on set with Russell, or at karaoke with her friend Anne Hathaway. But she could never get Idina Menzel to sing a duet of “Defying Gravity” from Wicked with her. “I’d go up to Idina in the hallways during Enchanted,” Adams tells Scovell, “and I’d say, ‘I hope you’re happy…I hope you’re happy now… ’ And she’d just go, ‘It’s not going to happen, Amy.’”
She also uses music as a form of therapy. “When things are out of control,” she tells Scovell, “I’ll sing the ‘Golden Helmet’ song, from Man of La Mancha. I’ll just go…[sings] ‘I can hear the cuckoo singing in the cuckooberry tree…’ And everyone in my life knows that means the situation is spiraling.”
Scovell also writes of Adams’s generous spirit, showcased by her habit of recommending actresses for roles. “I get excited for people when I know I should be competitive,” she says. “I’d say in an audition, ‘I don’t think I’m right for this, but you know who you should get?’ I used to do that when I was an unemployed actress.” She then mimics herself pitching in a meeting: “Has Zooey Deschanel come in? Because she’d be fantastic . . . Have you met Emily Blunt? Because she is really wonderful.”
However, Adams insists she’s far from perfect, telling Scovell, “I fluctuate from The Master to The Muppets in my daily routine.”
Lord, what a stunner. Fingers crossed for that Oscar nomination, since I've heard so many astounding comments about her performance in American Hustle.
Actress Amy Adams (R) and Darren Le Gallo attend the 25th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival awards gala at Palm Springs Convention Center on January 4, 2014 in Palm Springs, California.
She looks fantastic. Far and away the best thing she has worn in quite a while, though I did like the Michael Kors pantsuit she wore to the Her luncheon.
I haven't been liking the way she has been styling her hair promoting American Hustle, but the sleek hair is great on her. (Kind of wish she went for a side parting, though.)
The best thing about award season is not just the fashion, but seeing random A-listers schmoozing together.
American Hustle wasn't half as good as I had imagined it, but Amy nevertheless delivered a great performance. A bit annoyed that she's not getting as much buzz closer to the Oscars.
