Fashion designer indicted on 59 sex assault charges
LOS ANGELES - Celebrity fashion designer Anand Jon Alexander was indicted on 59 counts of sexual assault in a move prosecutors said Thursday would keep his accusers from having to testify at a preliminary hearing.
Prosecutors previously charged Alexander with more than 40 felony and misdemeanour counts involving 18 victims that included r*pe, sexual battery and committing a lewd act on a child. He pleaded not guilty to the earlier charges.
The indictment, unsealed Thursday, added two more victims to the original case, bringing the total number of victims to 20, and said the crimes targeted women and girls from 15 to 27 between November 2002 and March 2007.
Alexander, 33, is suspected of meeting women on the Internet then assaulting them when they visited with him about modeling opportunities.
His defence has claimed some of the women made up the allegations to seek fame.
Alexander's lawyer, Anthony Brooklier, said in some of the cases, the victims either kept in contact or met with the fashion designer after the alleged crimes occurred.
"We think this is made up of whole cloth, the entire case," Brooklier said Thursday outside of court.
Alexander was arrested in March at his Beverly Hills apartment. Bail was previously set at $1.3 million but Alexander remained in custody.
He was in court Thursday when Superior Court Judge David Wesley ordered him held without bail pending an Oct. 25 hearing. Prosecutors had asked for bail to be set at $5.1 million.
"One of the reasons in seeking the indictment is that it speeds up the process and avoids a preliminary hearing," said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the district attorney's office. "The nature of the charges allows victims not to testify twice."
Three arrest warrants also have been issued for Alexander in Dallas County, Texas, where authorities said they plan to seek indictments for sexual assault and extradite Alexander after his California case concludes.
Criminal investigations are also under way in New York and Massachusetts.
Alexander came to the United States from India as a teen with his sister and mother. He graduated from the Parsons School of Design in New York in 1998 and began designing jewelry and clothing.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Fashion designer Anand Jon Alexander ditched his profession and turned into a serial predator, hunting for girls and young women to have humiliating and painful sex with him, a prosecutor said Friday during opening statements of his trial.
Prosecutor Frances Young told the jury that Alexander was excited by luring aspiring fashion models to his Beverly Hills apartment and then forcing them to perform oral sex, inappropriately touching them or r*ping them.
Young said the 34-year-old designer kept a "conquest list" in which he noted some of his encounters with the girls and women, abbreviating the explicit sexual acts.
"He talks about violently having sex with underage girls," Young said.
"These things are windows into his soul and what excites him," the prosecutor said.
Alexander is accused of meeting women on the Internet and assaulting them when they visited California seeking modeling opportunities between 2001 and 2007.
Before opening statements, prosecutors dropped four more counts that had been pending against Alexander. He now faces 25 counts including forcible r*pe and committing lewd acts on a child. The nine alleged victims were 14 to 21 years old. Last month, prosecutors dropped more than half the original charges.
He has pleaded not guilty. He could face life in prison if convicted.
Defense attorney Leonard Levine countered in his opening statement that the only humiliation in the case was that the women never became models and were angry at Alexander because he made them do various chores while they visited him.
"They weren't lured to be here, they wanted to be here," Levine said. "They were too angry that they had been used.
"We build our celebrities up, but in many cases we can't wait to tear them down."
Levine added that if there was any sex involving Alexander, it was consensual, noting that some of the underage girls claimed they were 18 years old. Levine also questioned why many of the victims didn't go straight to police, but instead only came forward after Alexander was arrested.
"Were they not reported because nothing happened?" asked Levine.
The investigation began last year when a woman claimed she had been sexually assaulted at Alexander's apartment. He was jailed in June 2007 and has remained behind bars.
Prosecutors played two videos allegedly taken by Alexander in which he directs two girls to show their bodies to him. In one, a 17-year-old girl disrobed. Young said the fashion designer then began touching the girl.
"She will tell you this was the worst experience of her life," Young said.
Alexander, wearing a dark suit and his jet black hair in a ponytail, smiled in the direction of his sister as he entered the courtroom.
Alexander also is under indictment in New York on similar charges involving nine women and is under investigation by authorities in Texas and Massachusetts.
Born in India, Alexander graduated from the Parsons School of Design in New York and launched a fashion line in 1999. He was considered an up-and-coming designer and was named a person to watch by Newsweek.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Fashion designer Anand Jon Alexander will learn what his sentence will be for sexually assaulting aspiring models he lured to Los Angeles, only to be turned around and sent to New York where he faces similar charges.
Alexander, 35, is scheduled to be sentenced Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court. Prosecutors have asked that he be imprisoned for the maximum possible under the law—three terms of 53 years and six months to life.
He was convicted in November of 14 counts including forcible r*pe. Some of his victims, who ranged in age from 14 to 21, are expected to speak.
Prosecutors said Alexander often found women online, baited them with promises of glamorous photo shoots and other modeling work, only to fondle or r*pe them at his Beverly Hills apartment.
His sentencing caps a tumultuous post-verdict saga that included allegations of juror tampering by his sister, Sanjana, juror misconduct and Alexander's decision to represent himself.
In July, Superior Court Judge David Wesley found juror Alvin Dymally and Sanjana Alexander in contempt of court after determining Dymally appeared to want a romantic relationship with her when he spoke to her by phone twice during the trial and offered his help.
Dymally also gave her a note in a courthouse cafeteria, asking her to call him. She did but refused to meet with him alone.
The judge held her in contempt for contacting the juror and failing to report the misconduct. A hearing will be held in September.
Wesley, however, did not grant Alexander's motion for a new trial, saying there wasn't any proof the phone conversations swayed the verdict.
The designer has been featured on the television show "America's Next Top Model" and worked with such celebrities as Paris Hilton and Mary J. Blige. His Web site lists dozens of celebrity A-listers as clients, including Hilton, who is described as a fan of Alexander's hand-printed jeans, which sold for more than $700.
Beverly Hills police began investigating Alexander in March 2007 when a woman reported she had been sexually assaulted in his apartment.
During the trial, prosecutors relied heavily on the testimony from women who made the accusations against Alexander. Defense attorneys argued many of women were lying about what happened to them and sought revenge against Alexander when they didn't get modeling jobs.
He is under indictment in New York on similar charges involving nine women.
Born in India, Alexander graduated from the Parsons School of Design in New York and launched a fashion line in 1999.
