Ann Demeulemeester

Demeulemeester Tokyo

I just got back from Tokyo and also visited the Ann Demeulemeester boutique. I had been looking forward to seeing it since my first visit to Tokyo in December when I found out about Omote-Sando Hills.

I too was disappointed in the mall. I like the building and all the concrete but the layout of the mall is not good for pedestrian traffic. Also, none of the other stores in the mall compare to the Demeulemeester store, in appearance or what they sell.

My biggest surprise in the Ann store was that they sold men's XXS!!! I've only come across men's size XS in New York at Jeffrey's and pretty much everywhere else I've been only sells women's Demeulemeester or they start the men's wear with size M. Luckily, Ann's clothes are pretty androgynous and I can wear her women's 36 pants and 38 jackets.

Attached is a photo I took of the store facade in March, before the store opened. The image used is from the Antwerp boutique.

Demeulemeester reinvents black with subtle color

From Correspondent Elsa Klensch
PARIS (CNN) -- The fall season signals a first for Antwerp designer Ann Demeulemeester -- it's the first time she's used bright colors in her collection to offset her favored black.
And the most important of the new, brighter shades, she says, is red, evoking passion and danger. Demeulemeester uses red to accent her asymmetrical cuts -- cuts that she twists to create an illusion of clothes moving around the body.

"When I started this collection," says Demeulemeester, "I didn't know lengths or anything. "I made clothes that all look like they are twisted, but aren't. So it's like there is a movement in the clothing and in the body."
Demeulemeester explains that she wanted the colors in this new collection to have "full intensity."
"I also think that ... I use color in a big piece, but sometimes I use it in a very subtle way," she says. "I think that if the color is strong and you put the color on the right place, then you get also the full intensity even if it is only a little thing."
pic3.jpg
Some of the "right places" for red, she says, are in the make-up of her models' eyes, or on the soles of their boots.
"It's very strange," she says. "It's not evident and that's what I like."
But Demeulemeester has not forsaken black.
"I wanted to reinvent black because I cannot stand that people are saying black is out," she says, "as long as I have the impression that I can design new black."

For evening wear, Demeulemeester created a long black coat.
"For evening I just made it the longest possible," she explains. "I work with coats with trains and skirts with trains."
It creates, she says, a modern look, one that is both aggressive and beautiful.
"There is really a tension, I think," says Demeulemeester. "That's what I wanted anyway."

Is there a place to order the clothing online? Other than Aloha and Yoox?

Wasn't it also the first time she showed menswear as well? or was it S/S 96 ?

I found some more pictures of her shop in Tokyo, from contemporaryfashion.net

this is probably one of the coolest vest's i have ever seen!!!
but i have to say the splattered paint, though beautiful is a little pretentious...

well as unoriginal as it may sound i think her 'take' on things is usually well executed.. for example i dread to think what cavalli would do using the whole splattered paint technique when compared to Ann, who has and continues to express her vision with such elegance..(eg the splattered paint shoes she did for her SS06 mens line), and i think the vest is gorgeous..

but then again i might very well be biased :heart::flower:

^ Oh seriously?

Jennifer Aniston never striked me as a woman with that kind of personality.. The personality it takes to wear Ann's garments...

If you find some pictures, it would be much appreciated! :flower:

Reading this thread from the very first post...:flower:

I have the pair of boots that Nicole Kidman wore in the 9/03 Vogue editorial and recently bought some Ann's shirts. I don't think one has to have a particular kind of personality to were Ann's garments. People wear clothes, instead of the other way around. When you let clothes wear you, that would be a mockery.
