im a hongkonger myself, and i tend to think hk style brings a great mixture of foreign influence. well generally for locals, they do a lot of layering, which i think is pretty interesting. but they just never bring much new to the table - nothing very creative. for instance, leggings - they have been a significant part of hk streetstyle for a long time, however what i see is people wearing leggings 24/7, every season. it's just uh.. i dont know. they dont carry many unique, distinguishable style indeed.

while for expats, we tend to be greatly influenced by US or UK styles - but what's special is that we also implement a small mixture of local style. so it's all about the multiculturalism =D

i managed to find a few photos of my local friends - typical hk streetstyle

I'm sorry but...I could positively YAWN at the way most of those women are dressed with a few exceptions.....it's all matchy matchy Chanel Chanel, labels, labels......I don't think that's necessarily street style either...... Compared to the European or even American fash packs, these women choose such safe labels....I'm not impressed at all......
I guess cos those ppl went to a Chanel show so they chose Chanel-mix-Chanel. But it's undenialbe that u can see LV(including loads of fakes) bags everywhere.

Janith, your friends look soooo cute!^_^ But generally, I think Hong Kong ppl lack their own style.

thanks, i'll make sure they get a hold of it. :D

and ditto, i do think hongkongers need more personal creativity input.

It's the problem of the way clothes are sold in HK.........every shop seems to sell the same thing over and over again! It's v. hard to find kind of unique boutiques in HK without going designer.

However, a lot of HK ppl are clever with styling their outfits and some of them do come up with v. original combos. The older crowd also wear avant garde labels like CdG, Margiela and Yohji very well so in that sense, HK'ers are quite fashion forward.

I do wish that vintage clothing was a bigger trend though...... my friends in HK don't seem to 'get' the whole concept of vintage....

im gonna interrupt again but i know. there is no vintage here whatsoever. im a big fan of '60s and '70s fashion so basically what i can do right now is buy sewing patterns online, and build up my own vintage style. kids here dont really understand the theory of the fashion cycle.

^It's such a shame because Hong Kong and China actually has a wonderful source of vintage - European buyers actually go over to HK to buy vintage back to Europe to sell.

The girl wearing Junya Watanabe trench with Balenciaga bag, along with.. the girl wearing Tsumori Chisato shirt and a Y's purse, are my favourites..

:woot:

Hong Kong women are very well dressed.. but also very label conscious.. seems like Chanel is the prefered label :ninja:

that's because they were in the the hk chanel show.....
and all the women in the pics r celebrities or stylists

but i do love Hilary Tsui who is wearing Junya Watanabe trench with Balenciaga bag in the pic!

Singapore style is just so boring and repetitive.
It's the usual jeans+tee combo.

Yeah..i guess so too...but i guess because of the weather:blush: 32 degrees all the time, that makes them to choose just jeans and tee. When I lived there, thats exactly what I wear most of the time. Kinda boring, really.

In defense of Asian style, particularly here in Manila, there are actually several "trendsetters" and "fashionistas" around but do remember that 1) The climate is different. What might be trendy and "acceptable" around the world may be completely dumb to wear in this part of the world and 2) Not all the "good brands" are available, at least where I'm from. We don't have the complete or updated versions of stores (like our Topshop or Dorothy Perkins) and we don't have several others (like Forever 21). Also, 3) Some Asian countries are 3rd world countries. With no electricity or food, I doubt if anyone cares about fashion. That's why for the most part, the "jeans and t-shirt" combo reigns supreme for the masses. Yeah?

The weather plays a big vital part in my honest opinion. Here in Singapore, humidity and mr sun owns big time. I did tried layering and boy i almost had a bath on the streets. How i really wish the temp would drop to below 20degress. lol.

I think I like Hong Kong style ---it is not so "Harajuku girls".Lovely!
