Asleep = Perfect Lips, Awake = Chapped Lips

I really don't understand this, but I was wondering if somebody here would be able to explain and maybe help me out.

Before I go to sleep, I usually put on a little bit of lip balm (I use Burt's Bees and have also used Nivea and Vaseline with exact same results). First thing in the morning after I've woken up, I look in the mirror and my lips are soft, moist, smooth, full and rosy pink. They look absolutely perfect at that point. However, it seems that as soon as I have woken up their condition begins rapidly growing worse, despite using the same small amount of lip balm throughout the day (that is the only thing that prevents them getting completely chapped and keeps them looking at least half good). They gradually become dry, crinkle up, shrink, lose their rosy pink colour and become rough. WTF?

And before anyone asks, I never lick my lips, or bite them or anything like that during the time I am awake. I never breathe through my mouth, either (unless I'm forced to because I have a cold). This magically appearing chappedness happens equally as much during windless, humid summer days as it does in cold, windy winter days. The only difference I see between my being awake and being asleep is applying lip balm a few more times and I know that cannot be it, else my lips would look better if I left them bare during the day and they do not. Is there anything I can do to keep those elusive perfect lips I have every morning?

This use to happen to me as well. However it kind of changed when I started using Kiehl's LIP BALM #1 (applying it during the day and before I go to bed). I still wake up with chapped lips occasionally but not nearly as many as I had before using it.

It's nice to know that other people have the same problem even though it doesn't help either of us. LOL

Thanks for the suggestion, jealous hearts. If nobody knows of anything permanent or something that works all the time, I'll give that lip balm a try and see if it helps.

i have even worse problem.... when i am in pains i don;t get up as normal people, i bite my lips in sleep...

p.s. too much lip balm is not good... jut a bit is enough... and the best ince are the one from pharmacies...

I'm in this mess with you, too. I've come up with the idea it's because I sleep with my lips apart, none of the lip balm is being rubbed off while I sleep as it inevitably will when I'm conscious. Hmmm, maybe that's the rub.

Eurasian Melange, I wonder if your problem is caused by the environment, as you mentioned. While you say the problem is as likely to occur in the summer as it is in the winter, it’s important to remember that just about any weather (and the heating or air conditioning therein) can affect the hydration of the skin: If this is the case, your lips are likely to rapidly lose water during the daytime.

Currently, you are using lip balms by Vaseline, Burt’s Bees, and Nivea. From what I know of these products, they are experts in replacing the oil your lips would lose during the day, but not the water. That may be why you don’t seem to get much benefit from them during the day.

If I were you, I’d track down a lip balm that contains a higher level of glycerine or any other water-replacement ingredient. Clinique’s Superbalm range is great.

Good luck!

i think drinking more water helps.

when i was younger i hardly drank water and had problem with chapped lips now it hardly ever happens.

i never wear lip balm though and occasionally wear lipgloss when i go out which also helps in the winter months to protect my lips from the weather.

i find that if im indoors for most of the day my lips will be normal but if i go out then my lips get slightly dry from weather etc
