bah..toni pulls it off mostly cos of his looks.. im not a fan of what he does.. i see a lot of balenciaga in his recent collection..nevertheless it is better off compared to a lot of the other designers who showed... i dont know how ppl can rate josh goot so highly...its all been done.. im not questioning their commercial wearable appeal.. but as far as designs go..i dont see why ppl shoud hype him up.. take a look at old helmut lang and chalayan..that would educate some people..
Could'nt agree more.

Exactly what I thought when I first stayed here 3 years agol, never understood the hype around some of the local designers.

i love collettes work, hers stands out the most to me.
most Australia designers are fairly predictable , although like apertureromance said ,accessible to the average person on the street.
Betina Liano, One teaspoon, Alannah Hill, Sass & Bide, Tsubi etc.

Why is the infamous street wear brand PAM not mentioned? They make some pretty dope T-shirts!

theyre meh alright.. i wont really call them designers(no design in the clothes dept) ..more of a streetwear label with some cult following.. and i dont think KKK imagery(labelled as secret society) etc are cool.. i can understand doing something sinister.. but kkk imagery is just a bit too far.. if i see someone wearing that tshirt.. id think theyre a complete loser...i dont see any element of irony there.. unless of course i see a black man wearing that.....

same deal with claude maus ..derivative and no real design..and please dont even start on material boy. I know i sound like some snob but im just being honest.. the industry here sucks..period! id like to see someone orginal pop up..but the harsh reality is that those talented ppl go abroad as being truly original dosent work here.

hahah well! theres a heap of good australian designers. im a guy so some brands might not suit but il add a few girly ones.

bettina
tsubi

Agreed, I hardly call designing a graphic tee a fashion designer.

The reality that the real money is elsewhere wont keep the talent local, guess thats why theres niche markets hey?

What I would love to see down in these parts is male stuff with sharp tailoring skills, where the design is in the clothes and not the graphic.

Hello!! Why hasn't anyone mentioned:

Easton Pearson? and
Willow??

I also LOVE Akira...His tailoring is amazing!!

I also like Alice Mccall but i have to admit it's very high street..not too directional at all, just generally follows the Euro trends...but she does do it very well compared with most Australian designers.

Scanlan and Theodore are ok...also tend to follow Euro trends tho.

My personal HATE is Charlie Brown...not long ago she flogged ALL of her clothes on cable tv shopping channel AND now she expects us to take her seriously??? :yuk:

Alannah Hill is sooooooo overrated. So over it. Nothing new, always the same, same, same, lacy, frilly, under/over layers...eeek...enough Alannah!

sorry, no info, but I saw her in Hong Kong the other day with her child and its carer... Shopping in Pacific Place! She is so statuesque!

Ohhh, morriseel!! Willow, love her !!

And I totally agree with you about Charlie Brown :innocent: :ninja:.

I'm not a very big fan of Australian fashion.

I don't know if Alex Perry was mentioned but he kind of represents Australian fashion for me in that it's very very inspired by international designs. Charlie Brown is a foul 'designer.' She has no touch, no elegance, no nothing. It's really just target-style. Akira is probably the only designer I like.

Response to an older question: YOu can find more overpriced Kirrily Johnson at DIRECTIONS on New South Head Road in Double Bay. That store stocks lots of Australian designers but they've stopped stocking brands like Willow because it just doesn't sell well. In theory i'm all for supporting local fashion but i can't bring myself to buy anything really. The prices are similar to established international designers and that's really annoying. I'd rather spend my money there.

twistofgold...from the Vogue forums? Hi!

hahaha Yes, from the Vogue forums (isn't working for me tonight so i'm looking through some of the threads here :-) )

In regards to the Charlie Brown comment, I think I saw a dress she basically just copied from Camilla and Marc's Tallulah (blue and white stripes), using a bit of a different cut which I found strange. My year 12 formal dress was a Princess Charlotte (by Charlie Brown) and about the only thing i've ever seen that I liked by her.

And in that, it's just a classic floor length body tight strapless black dress with layers of tight/flat laying gorgeous black lace with some black diamontes on the bottom few layers.

Which nickname are you on Vogue forums? :-)

No one mentioned 'Marnie Skillings'.....check out her stuff in vogue.com.au
also, a up & coming one I really like- silence is golden www.silenceisgolden.com.au
and also, Alpha 60 didn't get Loreal award this year, actually the winner is a really young label, can't remember.

One of the greatest Australian designers that no one had mentioned is Richard Tyler.
I havent seen much fro him lately, but His work is as good as any couture designer in paris.

there are so many aussie designers that produce great stuff... it gets me mad that tsubi can flog the same stuff season after season and still be one of the most well known and exposed brands overseas and here. don't get me wrong i do love some of tsubi's (ksubi) designs and im in love with their jeans but they are really overpriced, and come with this funny stigma that tsubi is the be all and end all of street fashion...!

my faves at the moment:
Toni Maticevski - he WILL revolutionise aussie fashion
Cohen et Sabine
Willow
Josh Goot
Ksubi (Tsubi)
Lover - agree that some pieces are very similar to Marc Jacobs
Gorman
Kate Hurst
Little Potty Red Shoes
Trelise Cooper
Matthew Eager
Scanlan & Theodore
the list goes on...!
