Australian Designers

totally agree iolee, even thou i love tsubi their skinny zips are awesome, most of their stuff other than the jeans and a few of the tees are pretty meh.
The base of Australian fashion is streetwear and more casual stuff as there is simply IMO a very small market for anything else. Fashion and Life in general is very laid back, therefore avant garde and couture just wont work here.

IMO collette dinigan and sass and bide are highly overated, but snaps to them for bringing more attention to Australian fashion design.

With regards to Charlie Brown agree overrated, she has copied Fendi's B bags and belts this season and spawns many more copies through out her collections.

All in all i love Australian fashion, esp. Lover ( agree v.similar but still gorg and not rip off copies ), Cohen et sabine, Willow, Toni Maticevski, Alice Mcall, Akira ( he is the man lol ), marnie skillings, Trelise Cooper ( i think shes a kiwi :P gotta support my home town lol and Karen Walker )

Ahhh hey veepees, it's back up now luckily, so I guess it'll be a while til I see you online here again :-)

I am really looking forward to the new Lover season. It's just Summer here in AU now, yet i'm pining for Winter already

^ if we can include new zealand designers..then karen walker :crush:

my favourite aus designers are lover and tony matecevski  i'm starting to like alice mccall too

No doubt Australian fashion has experienced a boom in recent years.
While there is increasing diversity amongst designers, very few of them make me confident and excited about Australia's future on the fashion world stage. Maybe there are some teething problems. We don't have a fashion history or culture in Australia unlike Italy, France, Britain and Japan who have long histories in clothes making. We also have that wonderful 'laidback', 'casual' lifestyle where many people couldnt give a rat's **** about appearence.

But I think Akira Isogawa, Josh Goot, PAM, Karen Walker (NZ), Kirrily Johnson, Easton Pearson and Lover (though their website is full of desperate posturing) Dogstar (wonderful Brisbane-based DIY fashion story via Japan) amongst others are leading the way and doing great things. Getting their clothes stocked overseas and flying the flag for Australian fashion.

but...

Tsubi I've never liked. I think they are overrated and very 'now' and I don't know what they or Sass and Bide have in terms of longevity. They make clothes for people to party in and little more than that.

Morrissey seems like a lovely guy from what I have seen but his clothes don't do much for me either. Again, party clothes. Free champagne, air kisses and lines in the bathroom.

Talk about the Aussie designers, I only know Tsubi and Sass & Bide before, but now I am better informed. Thanks Mara for starting this wonderful thread and other people's efforts.:flower:

See you on here next time Vogue is down!

I'm loving Lover and Alice McCall at the moment, but Lover's Winter is 100x better than Ms. McCall's

agree on Lovers winter it is freakin gorg

mikka000 your spot on IMO, the Australian fashion industry is very much a baby compared to Italy, France, Britain and Japan and is doing a bloody good job in what we do best streetwear, but there are a few designers that are doing good high end stuff that aren't getting regonition because the tsubi's & sass and bides are getting all the attention.

im in love with an alice mccall dress at the moment...i hope santa surprises me with it

Ahhhh The Kristy, I really liked it when it came out but I don't think I could pull off the look...

I do agree with mikka000 that Australians have a casual sense of style… but I think rampant travel is really changing the Aussie style mentality. I’ve noticed that in my city, Melbourne, people are definitely more fashion conscious…and as consumers change, so too will designers!

In terms of Sass & Bide and Ksubi (whether they have talent or not), at least they have fostered/encouraged a lot of people in Australia to pursue design.

there are so many aussie designers that produce great stuff... it gets me mad that tsubi can flog the same stuff season after season and still be one of the most well known and exposed brands overseas and here. don't get me wrong i do love some of tsubi's (ksubi) designs and im in love with their jeans but they are really overpriced, and come with this funny stigma that tsubi is the be all and end all of street fashion...!

my faves at the moment:
Toni Maticevski - he WILL revolutionise aussie fashion
Cohen et Sabine
Willow
Josh Goot
Ksubi (Tsubi)
Lover - agree that some pieces are very similar to Marc Jacobs
Gorman
Kate Hurst
Little Potty Red Shoes
Trelise Cooper
Matthew Eager
Scanlan & Theodore
the list goes on...!

No big deal. But Trelise Cooper is a New Zealand designer.

i think australian fashion can be a little hit and miss... when its good, i love it, but then there are seasons where i could go without basically everything...

anyway, here are some pics from some of the better known aussies...
