^ yeh it is tradition to wear a hat to the races, i dont think 'tacky' is a requirement, but many people opt for it unknowingly.
on the whole, i think most people do a good job with their Melbourne Cup ensembles, except those trying to make a statement (which is never rare)

yup.. the people who try to make a statement never fail to amaze me at their tackiness..
but i think most look really good.
except their whole look is spoilt when they get drunk on champagne and are seen off-balance in their heels and hanging of their boyfriend's shoulders. or worse. walking around without their shoes.
what's the point of looking "dignified" if they can't act that way.

I'm soaking up everything Australian like a sponge! Anyone here from Melbourne? 
I'm from Melbourne - I love living here - I've been to most state capital cities and believe you can't been Melbourne for that underground sub-culture, arty, urban edge. There are a lot of fashion conscious people here too, but on a down side a lot of this is uniformed, conformist, non-individual fasion.
Also just to let people know - some of those photos of street chic taken from Vogue.com.au are up to two years old (give/take) so a lot has changed since then (as fashion does).

Hey! I originally posted in Trend Spotting and was sent over here...
I'll be studying abroad in Brisbane and was wondering what to pack.
I've read the posts already on where to shop when i get there, but i was wondering what in general is popular. I'll be at a univeristy (UQ), so what students wear to class or what they wear to the bars would be really helpful.
Where I go to school now i'm used to wearing the typical jeans, heels, and cami/blazer look to the bars, so I'm kind of nervous on what I should expect to wear!

Hi! I think you'll feel very comfortable wearing out what you wear now. I don't actually live in Brisbane (I live in Adelaide) but I would feel comfortable wearing what you've described in any of Australia's capital cities. Infact, it would probably be what I'd suggest wearing! Of course most cities are pretty diverse and it always depends on where you're going but I think what you've said would be fine to wear to a pub, bar or club.Trix46 said:

Ah, moved from Malaysia to Brisbane in 2001 and I almost slipped into depression at the 'fashion' found there.
In Malaysia fashion is really diverse, there is no one look which everyone strives for.
In Australia *everyone* wore pretty much the same thing with slight variations in colour. Problem is that there are so few shops which dominate the market. I lived in Brisbane for 4 years as a teenager and for the girls there was a set shop for jewellery which seemed to be the only place they went. For clothes there were a few main stores (City Beach, Sportsgirl ...) which they stuck to. Outside of the norm' was completely rejected. My school had school uniform and so on my first school excursion I wore clothes which I thought were pretty stylish. Problem was - it didn't fit into what 90% of Brisbane boys wear (at the time, City Beach board shorts and any old City Beach T-shirt) and so I got a pretty negative reaction, which was a shock for me coming from KL where I was considered a pretty cool dude (
). That's the way it was as a teenager and someone else on this forum somewhere said you can judge a city's stylishness but the teens and how diversely they dress. Judging by Brisbane teens, Brisbane does very poorly in the fashion stakes.
Before I finish, I better say I don't have any grudges against Brisbane really. Nice city, the people are reeally nice, but the style-side of things really got me down. Oh well, there are a few cool shops around Fortitude Valley and Elizabeth St Arcade (my shopping haven!). Problem is that 90% Brisbanites ignore the little stores and boutiques, and head straight for the chains.

Oh well, I'm in London now and having a blast! (As soon as I can free myself from homework for a bit!)

It's true that most teenyboppers and highschoolers ( hell even uni ppl ) dress the same way ( their 'casual clothes' are like 'uniforms' ). But there are some people who's got their own style and they are amazing!
I live in Melbourne ( yay!! ) and although there is a large proportion of 'fashion clones' here, there are also lots of ppl with their own interesting fashion styles.

I have to say, Most of those pics are old and aren't really showing the most stylish dressed people.
Races were a T** and **** fest. Most girls were incredibly tacky. Not me of course
Unforunately a lot of fashion IS very TRENDY. But there are heaps of people who dress individually. A lot of ppl from StreetChic (vogue.com.au) look like posers. (yeah i'm abit biatchy, but its getting late)
Australian fashion culture IS about FUN and youth. Not as serious as european fashion. Has to do with the mixed culture and constantly changing weather (melb).
When i think of AU fashion, mainstream, popular labels: TSUBI and Sass and Bide come to mind. (fashion brats and princesses with street edge)
