Balenciaga F/W 10.11 by Steven Meisel

What is more fashion forward and futuristic than some glamorous young bunch of girls totally decked out in the finest Balenciaga pieces travelling through time to some pre-historic primordial volcanic setting to have their picture taken by Meisel?

theres nothing futuristic about pre-historic.

I've come to the conclusion that even a phenomenal models line-up and a talented photographer cannot save a campaign from the utter fail. Personally, I'm not remotely appealed to those shots, which all in all saddens me, considering it was one of the ads I was most eagerly anticipating. The background is harsh, too remarkably harsh, I cannot even focus on the clothes properly. On a side note, I'm glad to see less severe opinions about Eliza on here - I'm not that drawn to her appeal, nor am I completely sold to her, but I've always thought she didn't deserve to be this fervently disliked.

i love it...the portraits look like a beauty ed. bravo meisel!
the "feeling" of this campaign was a total twist of what i was expecting, it's even better. it's great how the clothes do not match the background or the whole photography style but when you look closer, you feel like they do belong in that raw, planet mars-like space...it's futurism but not the clichéd one, with the "all white" look and the overly photoshopped photos. this and the louis vuitton campaign are the best of the season.

WOW TL;DR

I'm really in love with this campaign, although I will say that the group shots look a little lacklustre so far. However Freja, Meghan and Karen's portraits are beautiful. This may not be everyone's cup of tea but I personally find this concept quite fresh.

The portraits are amazing, i think that the Karen's one is the best.

Agree with Carla-A. For me, it's that background. Is it supposed to be a sunset to contrast the industrial-like clothes? I don't know, it's just kind of confusing what they were aiming for and just... wrong. The cast is great though.

I think this was trying to environmental campaign balanced with the clothes and the volcano-like background and the natural misty air. I honestly think there is something missing in the campaign and I can't quite pin point it. The group and solo shots are both gorgeous, I just don't know exactly who their target customer is.

There has to be more shots than this. Where are the eyewear and / or accessories shots?

So okay I don't wanna sound too critical but I absolutely hate this  no wonder since I've never liked something related with Balenciaga
But like always I have the feeling at least 70% of the people here in this forum are gonna like it just for because it's Balenciaga THE GOD...surely it's better than catastrophic SS10 ad but this actually sucks
First of all the background makes everything looking very distorted and too much apocalyptic, looks like a nucler war scenarium...then models just don't do the clothes ANY justice (well very hard to look decent in a dress that looks like a huge printed pillow, or a grandma outfit  ) and I don't wanna even complain about the presence of Z-list models like Eliza Cummings? When was last time she did something important for fashion? She's pratically a nobody but everyone here loves her just because NOW she's in the Balenciaga ad...and also Kirsi does she knows she's wearing high fashion clothes? She makes everything looking so cheap and indecent
I don't really mind the portrait but I just don't get why they put them, isn't the pursuit of a campaign to show clothes in a good way?Who cares if there's Karen Elson's face on it,I bet most of Balenciaga customers don't even know who she's
The only decent things about this are the shoes, yeah they're pretty good but nothing groundbreaking as someone said before, they're the new IT accessories of the moment, like Versace shoes were for SS10

looks like a heatwave summer collection ad to me..
bit horrible, apart from Stella's portrait
and the clothes s*ck :P

The portrait shots of Karen, Freja, Meghan and Stella look beautiful. Especially Karen's and Stella's.

Love Freja and Karen's portrait's especially but overall i'm totally disappointed. It's that background which is distracting me from the clothes. The model choice doesn't really interest me either apart from Karen, Caroline & Freja's appearances.
Anyway, thanks for posting!

If you just sit-back and stop analyzing every possible feature, its actually a pretty nice campaign.

i really don't understand why people are saying this isn't a good campaign

the photos are beautiful and work great together, the clothes are pictured very well and look amazing, the overall aesthetic of the pictures is very striking..

what more does a good campaign need?
