Balenciaga S/S 2009 Paris

The textile research on this collection is amazing.
All those fabrics, details, embellishment...
Ghesquière is the ultimate master of fabric development.

But I do feel this collection didn't age well. For who were those clothes designed for?
My problem with his last years at Balenciaga was his disconnected approach to reality and what women want/need/wear.
Being dressed like SCI-FI characters is not what most of women aspire to.

I believe it was supposed to be more conceptual artistic expression than clothes for women to wear. At this point, he had pre-collections to satisfy commercial needs.

To his credit, I do see several individual pieces that could be bought and worn out of the show context.

Except for the eveningwear this collection didn’t aged well but what is interesting is that it was already quite weird in 2009. The concept and the styling were very definitive. But the eveningwear with all the paillettes and shining effects were splendid really. I think the problem with this collection was that it was highly technical and it looked complicated.
And I don’t remember this being really produced compared to FW08 and FW09.
But some of the ideas developped in this collection were achieved in a better way later.

It’s weird but compared to you I really liked his later years at Balenciaga… I liked them more and more now that I’m getting older because of the ease he introduced in his clothes. There were more volumes, more ease, lower heels.
I’ve never stopped wearing Balenciaga by NG but back then the styling was maybe more inspiring because it was a total look idea and very edited but the strength of his clothes is really in the individuality. And today at Vuitton, because the styling is so challenging, it almost force our eyes to focus on the pieces.

This collection to me had moments which were definitely on Rick Owens’ mind as he transitioned from goth to space-age elegance in the latter part of the this decade. I agree that it’s not Nicolas finest moment but even the idea of the tights incorporated into the shoes proved influential…in this very same brand later on.
