What was interesting even back then was that the runway pieces were super expensive but the capsules, pre-collections and commercial versions of the brand were fairly priced. In a way those prices and the collections solidified a kind of faithful clientele for Nicolas. People bought mostly the motorcycle jackets and the bags but a lot of women wore Balenciaga daily. For all the people back in 2007...wait till you see Demna´s hoodies prices!! 😅
Nicolas is using the same strategy today at Vuitton. The runway extreme pieces are quiet expensive and limited in terms of production. They have a kind of small permanent collection, small capsules and then the logo stuff. In all fairness, those prices seem somewhat justifiable. Looking at Ghesquière's runway collections, lots of the pieces appear to be extremely detailed, heavily embellished and just complicated in their construction. Chances are they had limited production runs too.
If @Lola701 is remembering correctly about Balenciaga's secondary lines, then the brand must have been very well rounded. It's very much like Lagerfeld's Fendi and Chanel in a way.
Now what I find more offensive is modern Balenciaga selling muddy jeans, trashed sneakers and couture socks for 100s and 1'000s of euros. To make it worse, everything he does is instantly worshipped by those fashion dudebros/incels who use soyjaks as avatars.
