Designer Prriya Awasthy featured a lot of them in her collection Black Virgin, like the one worn over a polka dot corset by the model in the image.

According to the designer, the shrug can prove to be a useful asset to your wardrobe. "We all want to look trendy. But, as we live in a conservative society, a shrug is a good way to cover up when you wear a bikini-cut kurta, corset or strappy top. It's more convenient than a shawl or jacket."
The idea is, once you hit the party, you slip off the shrug and show off your slinky number. Or, if you feel underdressed, simply keep the shrug on.

Definitely our favourite pick from the collection.

Here we see a shrug teamed with a printed chiffon blouse and linen printed capris.

If you're wondering what a shrug is, here's some background info: The shrug, which happens to be a HOT accessory this season, was originally a sweater, usually of shrunken proportions, worn as a layering piece. However, recent shrug styles look like they are made of sleeves only.
All three pieces in the image can be worn as separates. Use your imagination to mix and match.

Bling is out
August 30, 2006
Pretty, elegant and subtle appears to be in. So is the blouse, which suddenly looks more stylish than the garment your mother may have worn back in the 80s.

Here we see a pretty smock (remember those dresses you wore as a baby girl?) chiffon blouse and a beige skirt with box pleats, perfect for any romantic occasion. Also, catch the stylish dress at the back, with lots of applique work.

Wear skirts that go 'swish'
August 30, 2006
We all swooned at this circular skirt teamed with a chiffon blouse.
The skirt swished its way down the ramp. Both pieces can be worn as separates.

Accessories get chunky
August 30, 2006
The accent on accessories this season seems to be 'chunky'. Notice the big, fat white bangle and necklace with various-size baubles.
Again, don't miss the shrug.

A little black lace dress
August 30, 2006
Reigning Miss India Neha Kapoor, who made it to the top 20 at the Miss Universe pageant in 2006, looks stunning in this pretty little black embroidered lace dress.
It has an empire neckline, which is hot this season for both dresses and blouses.

Men wear applique too
August 30, 2006
Hot model Rajneesh Duggal, a favourite with the ladies, dons a simple navy shirt that's spiced up with applique work.
The shirt is dressy but looks great with a pair of simple denims.

Pockets strike a pose
August 30, 2006
Here's a slightly quirky, but chic ensemble.

You have a balloon skirt, which looks like it has polka dots but is actually made of cutwork. We love the pocket that's big enough to carry your cell phone, money or credit card. The top is an off-white knit top with an offbeat neckline made of...chiffon braids!

Doll it up
August 30, 2006
If you have a good figure, there's no reason why you can't flaunt it with this elegant black and white strapless doll dress. The skirt has lots of applique work.
Don't miss the stark white, high-heeled pumps that go with dresses and skirts, both for office and party-wear.

Bottoms that rock!
September 1, 2006
We spotted some offbeat, eye-catching bottom pieces on the runway this season.
Here, model Vibhinita sports a gold-white linen skirt with fabric and metal embroidery, finished with organza frills. The creation is by 27-year old designer Gaurav Gupta

A new beacon on the fashion horizon
September 1, 2006
There's nothing more inspiring than an artist who is driven and passionate about his or her vocation and has made it to the big league at a young age.

Gaurav Gupta is one such achiever.
A 2000 graduate of NIFT, Delhi and Central Saint Martins', a competitive design school in London, this designer carries his sensibility on his sleeve, literally. Known to play with asymmetry and innovation, the 27-year old paints an avant-garde picture, sporting an asymmetrical hairdo and ensemble to match, clad in Jodhpur-like trousers designed by him, with a pale pink top, and eye-catching belt with a huge silver buckle.
He's not a one-time wonder either. Gaurav's autumn-winter collection was also well received at WL Fashion Week 2006. Here, we see model Carol Gracious sporting a short fitted piece with 'textual embroidery' made up of fabric, metal sequins and beads.

'I have a mental muse'
August 31, 2006
Gaurav, who launched his own label 'atpuG varuaG' in 2004, talks about what inspires him. "I don't have a physical muse, but a mental one. Design, for me, is a constant growing process. There's so much energy around me. I travel and brainstorm a lot."

"I would love singers Madonna and Bjork to wear my clothes," he says, "and, from India, actresses Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das..." Here, we see a draped sari with an innovative pallu sporting metal and crystal rosettes. The embroidered blouse is made of sage georgette.

Signature style: Experimentation
August 31, 2006
At the last WL fashion week in March, Didier Grumbach, Chairman, French Association of Couture, and Chairman, Chambre Syndicale de Haute Coutur, a prominent figure in the world of international fashion, told as that a world-class designer must have a message -- a signature style completely his own.

Gaurav sums up his signature style in one world: Experimentation. "Be it with the cut, embroidery, draping, the mix, pattern or concept, it's all mixed. There are lots of cute, draping, lines and flow."
His favourite foreign designers are Balenciaga, Sophia Kokosalaki and Comme De Garson. His eyes light up, especially when he mentions Balenciaga. Here, model Tapur Chaterjee sports a white draped jersey dress.

'I learnt a lot at design school'
August 31, 2006
"The real world is more calm. There are fewer expectations and it's a bit boring compared to design school, where the atmosphere is fiercely competitive," says Gaurav, who thrives on competition.

"There's a lot of stuff that goes into the managerial side of things, but my brother handles that aspect. We work as a team." We simply loved this pair of draped trousers with satin detailing. Can you carry it off?

'Art and Greek draping'
August 31, 2006
Gaurav defined his spring-summer collection 2007 collection as a 'melange of inspirations taken from art nouveau, ancient Greek draping and conceptual pattern cutting'.

We especially loved what he did to the sari, giving it a youthful, contemporary look. Model twins Tapur and Tupur sport twin white dresses with digital prints. We also loved the draped cloth bags.

This one makes a statement
September 1, 2006
The piece from designer Varul Bahl's collection is special; it looks like it's been sewn together using palm leaves.

Bahl's collection appears to have been inspired by human psychology. His Autumn-Winter collection seemed to ask: Who am I today? This time, it asked a different question. His collection brochure was accompanied by a box containing a jar of cream. The cover was inscribed with the words: Middle Age Cream. It seemed to address our obsessive desire to stay young forever. We loved the theme. And, we loved the skirt.

Fashion makes a statement

Do you often find yourself asking: who am I today?
Am I nice, or am I brassy? Do I have to wear a mask to fit in?
Designer Varun Bahl's collection addressed these questions even as he went on, literally, to make a style statment.
His collection represented the quintessential question -- is today's urban lifestyle leading to a sense of confusion within one's own head?
The models sported no accessories expect for silver or gold-coloured high heels -- and symbolic gold masks, like the one in this photograpgh, at the back of their heads.
The hairstyles, too, were minimal; the colours of the collection ranged from mud greens and beige to splashes of fuchsia pink.
Bahl also used double-layered dresses right through the collections.
Can you wear this?
The grapevine says the classic look is in; Bahl's collection was totally in synch with this fashion forecast. It was very wearable and very elegant.
The colours used were soothing to the eye. It is clear that dressed and slightly flared knee-length skirts are here to stay.
