Boston shopping

So weird that there is a Zara in Orlando, Florida and not one in Boston. What is wrong with that picture???

I like Zara's clothes, but they are cut waaaaayyyy too small. Nothing ever fits me right. Darn European sizing. LOL.

and someone please tell me WHY is everything in Club Monaco only black and white???

at least the zara in natick should be opening this september...
that's certainly something to look forward to (only 20 minuted from my house woohoo!! :woot:)

i'm glad to hear that they are also going for the newbury st and downtown crossing location..
maybe a big store in that location will help to revitalize that area a bit.. seems encouraging ^_^

where exactly is Downtown Crossing?

Zara stores in Europe are always crowded, but in the US the stores often look empty.

where exactly is Downtown Crossing?

Downtown Crossing is on the opposite side if the commons from Newbury Street..

It's kind of hard for me to describe.. but if you were taking the green line you would get off at Park Street..

Filene's Basement to shut flagship till '09

Firm failed to find a temporary site

By Jenn Abelson, Globe Staff | June 15, 2007
Filene's Basement, the landmark Boston merchant, has failed to find a temporary location in Downtown Crossing and will close its flagship store for nearly two years to make way for a massive redevelopment project.
The merchant, however, allayed shoppers' fears by saying it will preserve the store's famed automatic price markdowns when it reopens in spring 2009.
The chain is shuttering the downtown location Aug. 31 to accommodate a major project to convert the former Filene's department store building into condominiums, a hotel, offices, and retail space. Construction is expected to begin this fall.
"After an exhaustive search, Filene's Basement was unable to identify a temporary location that was large enough to accommodate their existing operations," the company said yesterday in a statement.
Mayor Thomas M. Menino yesterday criticized the retailer, saying Filene's Basement "could have found a location in the city if they really wanted to continue the business."
Boston officials tried to broker a deal for Filene's Basement, which employs about 220 union workers, to move into the vacant Barnes & Noble building in Downtown Crossing. Menino also said the city looked into finding space in a hotel near the convention center in South Boston.
"They made a corporate decision. I'm very frustrated," Menino said. "We've been a good partner with Filene's Basement. They've been a landmark, and we could have worked much closer with them."
The company is expected to receive $15 million to vacate its space while the developer renovates the building, said local officials who asked not to be identified because the deal is not public.

thanks lucy!!
too bad that they didn't find a temporary space.. Menino seems so miffed!

So glad to hear that they will be retaining the automatic markdown system when they reopen though..
that was definitely one of my main concerns..

What's the best location to shop in Boston? :flower:

Yesterday I hit the Pru and Copley. Didnt find anything, but I have to mention this.

I was in Kenneth Cole in Copley. And the two SAs there never said a word to me. The moved to one side of the store and were whispering.

I dropped a jacket off of the hanger and picked it up, and then put it back on the rack and continued looking.

The male SA then came over and started sorting the rack I was at, and was talking to the female SA and said "I just love when you get those customers that pick stuff up" and then started going on and on about customers who dont pick stuff up.

They really started bitching about customers, talking about a girl in a wheelchair who was rude, and such and such.

All while Im standing there shopping. They were both being so catty and bitchy and still NOT ONE WORD to me.

I finally just decided that I didnt want to deal with them, or listen to them anymore. And I wont be shopping at that Kenneth Cole ever again.

^^ I think you probably still have to pay for the exhibit... things like that are not often included in student memberships as far as I know...

Also, I think it might depend on which college you go to... you need to show a student ID I think and your school probably has to be paying for some sort of membership... I'm a little shady on all these details so don't quote me on it

I'm sure if you called up the MFA they'd be able to let you know--you could also check their website.. they might have the info there

The only Filene's in Boston now, is the "Basement" (the discounted clothing); the other is no longer as they are now Macy's. I can't say that I'm a fan ... it used to be that the "Basement" had some really great deals, nowadays, it almost appears as though they've had clothing especially made for the outlet audience. If you wear a larger size (12+ or 10/10+ in shoes) ... forget it. Frankly, I don't even bother anymore ... it's not worth my time!

Yeah about that Ianastar, people in those shops can be kinda...catty, you must fend for yourself darl!

I'm wicked excited for Zara, I've never heard of it but it sounds great.

dreamecho, did you go to urban?

lucy, i did go to the show at urban. did you go?

the line started on the jfk street side of urban, wrapped around the curious george goes to wordsworth bookstore, and continued down brattle. long line indeed! not everyone got in, but i got there relatively early and got in. it was nice to see people of all ages--there were even people in their 50s and 60s!

the show took place on the first floor where they have all the men's clothes. all the racks were pushed aside and a permanent stage was built up against the window on the brattle st. side.

i was excited to see dinosaur jr live, but it was disappointing because the quality of the sound system was terrible. it sounded like a garbled, blurry mess. my sweetie, who is in the live production industry, was absolutely horrified! as soon as the band started playing, his reaction to the sound went something like this:   :yuk:.

it was a good effort from all parties involved (toyota yaris, dinosaur jr. WERS, urbn, freeyrradio), but i hope they get better production equipment next time. urban will be hosting other events (dj, concerts, etc.) in the future, so it'll be interesting to see what happens next.

Great salon info thanks. I need to find a good salon.

Im going to try the Arsenal Mall today. Any thoughts?

Ive literally been all over New England shopping for pants for work. I find ones that I like...but they never have my size.

Im going to have to resort to buying online I think, which I don't care for.

the arsenal mall is what we call a "dead mall". its full of no-name stores that are here today-gone tommorow. the mall has always been empty every time ive gone. the filenes basement is so-so there. might be OK for mens pants.

I will never go to Arsenal Mall again.

It reminds me of the Landmark mall near DC. Just dead, empty space.

Kind of a waste of "historic"(?) building. Would be better as lofts/condos:lol:

^^yeah arsenal mall is really a waste of time for the most part.. they should find a better use for that space..

that whole area could use a bit of a cleanup.. looks like a warehouse or something
