EXCLUSIVE: 'My life of madness and chaos' - Cara Delevingne gives a rare interview at Elle Style Awards
She is the model of the moment and is planning to make her mark in both the worlds of film and music.
But, in a rare exclusive interview, Cara Delevingne told the Standard how she is struggling to come to terms with her success and described her life as a mix of “madness and chaos”.
The 21-year-old supermodel has been the star of London Fashion Week having graced the catwalk for Burberry and Giles Deacon, has two movies due for release this year and is plotting a move in to music as a singer.
Speaking at the Elle Style Awards last night, she joked that her ultimate ambition was to become Prime Minister. Asked what it was like to be Cara right now, she said: “I don’t know – I have no idea. I haven’t really had time to take anything in.
“I think when I stop and think about it, it just confuses me more and more. I can’t really process it all that quickly. But it’s good – it’s just the same as always – causing madness, chaos – organised, somehow. Something like that.”
She admitted that being a style influence “weirds me out”, adding: “People say very weird comments to me about what I’ve done, and I’m like, ‘Really?’ That doesn’t sound right. In my mind it’s very different to what people see.”
Cara, who was joined last night by her rumoured girlfriend Michelle Rodriguez, is the younger sibling of Poppy, 27, and Chloe, 29, and described them as “the best big sisters ever”.
She added: “That’s the important thing you need in this business, good family and friends. It really is.”
At last night’s glittering ceremony at One Embankment, she presented her friend Pharrell Williams with the international recording artist award.
The US singer was full of praise for Cara and hinted that the pair were planning on working in the studio together after describing her as “family”.
He told the Standard: “I think Cara is much bigger than everyone’s expectations. There are whispers out there about music and movies, but I think at the end of the day, what people should focus in on is not these specific projects, but on her spirit.
“Because trust me - the films will only get better, the parts only get bigger, the music only gets better, the modelling only gets better. But her spirit is becoming refined and she’s becoming refined and it’s another chapter in her life. We’re happy to say this is family now. So there’s going to be some really cool things.”
Cara responded: “I’m kind of speechless at this point, I don’t really know what else to say. He’s kind of blown my head out of the water. What an incredible man.
“It would be wicked [to work with Pharell] – it would be a dream.” Williams, 40, then teased: “You have no idea what’s going to happen.”
The ceremony was hosted by Nick Grimshaw, who cheekily took pot shots at several of his friends in the audience. He said Rita Ora had dressed “like it was Halloween”, and that Lily Allen’s weight loss meant she could now fit into fashion sample sizes.
