Oh la la! Carla Sarkozys up to Michelle O for a kiss
05th April 2009
She was hailed the new Jackie Onassis and wowed all she met on her inaugural tour. Then along came Michelle Obama.
Last April Carla Bruni, the other half – well, three-quarters – of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, was crowned the world’s most glamorous First Lady.
But a year on, a new contestant has entered the First Wives Club beauty pageant and Carla seems less than enchanted.
Sealed with a kiss: Michelle Obama, left, and Carla Bruni greet in Strasbourg
As these pictures show, when Michelle, 45, left Britain for France and Germany this week she found that, unlike Sarah Brown, Carla’s welcome was more cordial than cosy.
Carla, 41, did not travel to London for the ‘handbag summit’ presided over by Sarah, 45, and, though she declared herself wounded by the suggestion that she did not want to share the limelight, it would be fair to say Carla is not a woman used to being outdone.
Her beauty, wardrobe, low heels and high cheekbones have made her the First Lady all others hope not to be stuck beside in any picture line-up.
One glance at Carla, dressed top to flat-pump toe in Dior, and any mere mortal simply resigns herself to looking like Carla’s fat friend.
Show of unity: The stylish First Ladies opted for demure for the NATO summit
The stylish women played it safe in trouser suits as Michelle stuck to classic black, while Carla opted for her trademark purple in a lilac coat.
It was rumoured that Carla opted not to attend the G20 summit in London a few days earlier so as not to be upstaged by the new competition. The official line was that Nicolas Sarkozy's wife had wanted some quiet time in Paris.
Ladies day: The spouses pose with arbishop Jean-Pierre Grallet, centre, and canon Bernard Eckert as they pose in front of the Strasbourg's Cathedral
But there have been claims that Carla only avoided attending because she was used to being the centre of attention, and was not enthused about joining 16 other First Ladies at the same time
But she must have had a change of heart as she was among a large group of wives including Gordon Brown's wife Sarah at the French cathedral.
The pair put on a public display of affection after they were encouraged to ‘break away’ from other leaders' partners during the walk-about which also included a visit to a cancer research institute.
‘As a model and pop star Carla always likes being the focus of people’s attention,’ a Paris source said.
Walk about: The pair were encouraged to 'break away' from other leaders
Left, Sister act: Sarah and Michelle at No10 - and their husbands had better get theyre soon if they want to have any secrets left. Right, Tense: Set jaws from Michelle and Carla whose husbands had better there soon if their countries are to have a relationship
LEFT, Reunited: 'You look fabulous.' 'No you look fabulous'. 'No you...' Michelle and Sarah linking arms round each other's waists. Right, FROSTY: Her back rigid and arms locked, Carla struggles to resist Michelle's attempt to turn the obligatory air-kiss into a hug
CHEEKY CHAPPY: President Nicholas Sarkozy's hand seems to have wandered from the business of making history as he and his wife greet Michelle and Barack in Strasbourg on Friday
