Christian Dior 'Lady Dior' Handbags 2008-2014 : Marion Cotillard

Christian Dior Lady Dior Handbags : Marion Cotillard by Annie Leibovitz

I thought we should probably start a new thread for this as it's a new photographer and campaign?

Here are the New York ads so far:

RED ALERT: The next chapter in the Lady Dior advertising saga, featuring Marion Cotillard, sees the actress continuing her adventures — this time in New York City as “Lady Red.” Print ads, photographed by Annie Leibovitz, are slated to break in August fashion titles and be plastered around Paris during fashion week in October. The cinematic image suggests a double life, as Cotillard stares into a mirror. Coming later in the season is a second scene depicting Cotillard getting ready for her close-up as a femme fatale. The Oscar-winning actress posed atop the Eiffel Tower in a campaign in the fall for the Lady Dior bag, and was also featured in a six-and-a-half-minute thriller for the Internet this spring as Dior puts more star power behind its brand and more intrigue into fashion advertising. A Dior spokeswoman said another online movie is planned for December, but it is not yet shot.

5 days until Chapter 2 is released.
Thanks for the heads up Vogue28!

it's still all kinds of WTF for me. that bag in the second ad, that's not even the Lady Dior bag!

^I had an obsession with Tina Turner when I was little, and that album cover always stuck in my mind.
I think it's kinda similar

^ The funny thing is how the two photos are exactly the same. Only Tina looks like she's having fun.
I  Tina too

:winkiss:

The countdown timer is off and Chapter 2 isn't available

 Can't wait to see new print ads and the next film.

The shot looks nice with Marion on the couch. I hope that becomes a print ad.
I'm also curious about the new chapter. December seems quite a while away..

Hmm that looks odd? The right side seems totally disconnected from the left?
Thanks for posting though! :flower:
Can't wait to see in high-res maybe it looks better!

It's really just boring. I can't believe they've made this pathetic campaign their flagship.

She looks very old. Like a time-traveler from the 50s. I know Mad Men is in, but come on.

What woman would buy these bags presented in this fashion? These ads only speak to 45+ age group, and I am not saying they are not important. Yet, very few 30-somethings will look at this ad and say 'I want to be this woman.'

When Diana carried this bag, she was exciting in fashion. This 'character' in the ad most certainly isn't.

On the other hand, it is just a bag! I mean, not even a fragrance. With a perfume, you can carry people to dreams, since everyone will experience something personal and unique with it. So I do not blame companies to create outrageous campaigns and promotion marathons for their releases. Perfume sells. But to create this much fuss over a bag? What you see is what you get anyways! Why bother so much, with these different cities and directors and tacky movies?

The whole concept is silly and a waste of money.

Mad Men is set in the 60s. I certainly have no problem with the 50s/60s vibe to this campaign, the 60s are of course an enormous inspiration to the times we live in. It's the execution that is sorely lacking. And all the fuss, as you mentioned, pasha.

^ yes, but MM characters wear 50s inspired looks, since the producers claim that the new fashions would not be adopted that easily at the beginning of a decade. Especailly by business circles. The costumes will change obviously, I expect them to, at least this season now, but the first two have been very conventional 50s still.

I feel completely the opposite way. I think it is the concept that is really off-point and redundant. 50s, or 60s... whatever it may be... Do we really need a revival through some handbag ad to sell the same tired purse since forever? How many times do we have to see the same thing from Dior: 'lady-like dressing?... well, let me give you Parisian 50s!' Galliano is in a rut.

The execution, for that theme, is fine. A woman is walking around in cities, running away from bad men, and all her life she happens to fit in a fabulous(!) purse. They hired an actress, some director, good PShop people. They did all that they could do. It is what it is. But like Karl says, it doesn't matter how much money it costs or how many hours you put in. If the result is lousy, it is lousy.

^I'm going to wait to see it in high-res before I comment on how Marion actually looks.
But I agree that the ad itself is pretty underwhelming.
Those behind the scenes shots were pointing towards a more rustic toned down setting with a huge pop of red which would have been quite beautiful.
I'm just really surprised looking between those shots and the final ad - as the two are completely different? And the right side of the ad is literally disconnected.
I don't really get it.
I think the first shot with the eiffel tower was attention grabbing and definitely worked...but I don't think there needs to be a major landmark in every campaign to convey what city Lady Dior is supposed to be in?
I just hope there's some more ads - as Vogue28 said - the picture of her reclining on the couch could be beautiful.

I think it's better to do something retro inspired rather than to carry on that slimy overly photoshopped 00s look that Dior was stuck with for years. So in that sense they're on the right track.

Young people these days aren't as crazy about things being fresh and new as they were in the 80s and 90s....people like a bit of nostalgia for things they never even experienced...it's natural since it's only in the last 10 years that vintage stuff has been readily accessible for everyone.

Oh, the 50s inspired theme could have been done much better. Hiring an actress, director and technicians isn't all it takes to make a good campaign....it takes some inspiration as well. That's definitely lacking. They are trying to connect to the great years for Dior, but it has failed. None of the magic is there and that is because they have no vision, no spark, no imagination....by the looks of it, anyway.
