Rei Kawakubo’s Spring 1992 show was an unqualified romp. Titled “Unfinished,” it featured a riot of references including Tibetan tiger prints, folksy Chinese florals, and many, many stripes. Kawakubo “created a primitive feeling on jackets, trenches, and dresses with exposed linings, torn-off collars, and missing sleeves,” noted Vogue. The designer’s rationale? “I wanted to go back to the beginning and show that the finished product isn’t what’s interesting anymore,” she said. “When clothes are in the middle of construction, then there’s always the question of what comes next.”

The show also offered multiple messages on the beauty front. Models sported drawn-on tattoos, while paper kerchiefs covered gel-slicked hair.
