Londoner's Diary: British Vogue's Alexandra Shulman picks Michelle Obama over Theresa May
In today's Diary: Alexandra Shulman wants Michelle

When news broke that Theresa May would soon grace the cover of US Vogue, some wondered if the Vivienne Westwood-clad Prime Minister had chosen new Dame Anna Wintour over her UK counterpart Alexandra Shulman. But the woman at the helm of our fashion bible says that she wasn’t interested: she’d rather have Michelle Obama.
Last night Shulman, who has edited British Vogue for almost quarter of a century, was interviewed onstage at Kings Place by lawyer Miriam González Durántez as part of Jewish Book Week and Shulman’s diligent publicity trail of her book, Inside Vogue: A Diary of My 100th Year.
After an extensive discussion of a busy 2016, González Durántez brought up May’s forthcoming appearance in the April issue of US Vogue. First, Shulman cast doubt over the suggestion that the PM had clinched a cover. “That’s not entirely clear,” she said. “I’m not sure whether she is [on the cover].” So why is she not in British Vogue instead? “I’m afraid I didn’t ask her,” Shulman shrugged. So who is on her future hit list? Melania Trump? “I don’t know about Melania on a cover,” she said. “But she’s not First Lady yet. I think I’d rather concentrate on trying to get Michelle Obama.” The audience burst into applause.
Despite favouring Mrs Obama, and nailing her stylish colours to the mast by printing a Samantha Cameron editorial in the last issue, Shulman clarifed that there was no bad blood between herself and May. “She’s very nice,” said Shulman. “On Desert Island Discs she said she’d like a lifetime subscription to Vogue as her luxury item. So before she became Prime Minister I arranged that.”
