I'm surprised at some of the vehement responses in here by pro-dairy campaigners. One would honestly think that you're dairy farmers. I'm sure you aren't.
Soy is like anything, you need to find the brand that suits your taste. I first tried Sanitarium Organic Soy milk after I decided that it wasn't ethical to support the veal trade, nor mass production of milk (even organic milk) for breakfast cereals. I tried one cup and I hated it. It tasted like plasticine. Honestly, just like plasticine. I talked to my friend Alejo who lives in Peru and he was shocked, he said that in Peru, the soy milk was creamy, smooth and delicious.
So I decided to perservere. On one shopping trip I perused the soy milk section for about 15 minutes. I finally decided on trying some 1.5l vitasoy caramel.
So I got home, both me and my boyfriend tried it, and it was DELICIOUS. Not only was it smooth and very very creamy, but my stomach did not feel bloated at all afterwards and there was NO sour aftertaste in my mouth afterwards (as you get with milk).
We were both hooked. We decided to try the original creamy vitasoy, and again, delicious. I'm still a huge fan of the caramel, but both are good. Now we can treat ourselves to home-made creamy gravies and sauces, homemade shakes, horlicks, you name it.
I don't miss milk at all, it tastes sour to me now.
However I do still buy organic cheese sometimes, I think it's all about moderation really. Because i'm only buying one 500g block every 3-4 weeks, its different from buying a pint every 2 days of regular cows milk.
Another thing that I love is that I don't waste any soy milk. It keeps in the fridge for about 11 days for fresh and about 15 for non-fresh. One thing that put me off drinking milk was having to throw away half pints of it because it had gone bad after only 2-3 days. Now I don't have that problem, and I don't have that conscience.
To the people in this thread who believe that peta is directly responsible for the drive behind soy, and who are so determined to be pro-dairy, it seems that you're so adamant in trying to find the negatives of soy that you'll believe any anti-soy propaganda, which makes you just as biased.
A HUGE percentage of people are lactose intolerant, and i'm glad that soy and rice milk is being recognised as a delicious alternative. It works for me, it works for a lot of people, there is no need to be a 'sceptic', and i'm sorry that you feel threatened but i'd suggest trying brands for yourself and seeing why other people like it, rather than just scoffing at it without even having tried it (or at least trying one brand and assuming that everything tastes the same).
Phew, that's all I have to say for now!
