If I’m feeling generous, then I’d convince myself that it’s very deliberate that this aesthetic is ripped off wholesale from a JC Penney catalogue circa 1984. And that includes horrendous, heavy-handed retouching that’s turned her face into a 2D Warhol portrait that was oftentimes the result with the airbrushing of the time— just peruse the Vintage Magazines threads. Even the thin black border, the bylines for the layout are very early-80s in structure. The only layout element that isn’t 80s is the “A” of the leading spread. But MAS’ tedious obsession with cheap 80s consumer mall fashion via vintage Sears/JC Penney catalogues would serve better as a costume designer for a film like “Call Me By Your Name”. Can’t wait until she finally moves on to the consumer 90s and styles Nicolas’ wears inspired by the worst of that decade Blossom and Seven— including babydoll worn over leggings with a floppy hat pinned with a sunflower.
