Daria Werbowy

oh, but the drawing`s not that artistic should I say...
It`s kinda like a manga, if you know what i mean.

I`m halfway done translating the interview but I gotta go down stairs to have dinner, so after that, I`ll finish it and post it!

mangadaria, that's something we didn't have yet...
enjoy your meal! :)

to say it in an extreme way, there're two darias actually: lancome/testino/clean/bright daria (which personally i leave to those who deserve airbushed women :D) and inez&vinoodh/weber/dirty/dark daria (which is MY daria!, the one my blog is devoted to!)

yeah. I just lean to know this other Daria. Your daria I mean ^_^

well, i'm first to say that's an extreme view.
there're also things in-between, i'm thinking of her amazing prada and chanel campaigns. also ysl, last year.
i also like what she did for gucci, though that isn't my kind of things.

interview from the june issue of SPUR ( with Michika Ishikawa, a Japanese illustrator )
the underlined parts are my opinion...haha
And before you read the interview, I just wanna let you know that the Japanese language isn`t really clear-it`s not very logical, and there are some parts where I had to kind of complement what Daria probably have said (before it was translated into Japanese).
Enjoy:flower:

<<"Lancome" gave me a voice>>

Michika: How did you feel when you were chosen as the muse for Lancome? And how was the shooting in Prague?I heard the shooting was done in a famous movie studio.

Daria: Oh, I feel very honored that Lancome chose me. It`s not an experience every model can have, so I must say I`m very lucky. Through Lancome, I got a "voice". With this "voice", I am hoping that I can help women realize the beauty each and every obe of us has
It`s a special "job" for me because actually, I myself used to be very ashamed of modeling. But now, beacause I`ve come to love who I am, I love my job! The shooting in Prague...well, if I were to put it in one word, it`ll be "long".(laughs) But I had a great time acting in front of a lot of cameras. We really concentrated on making the film as good as possible, with everyone sharing ideas. When you take a movie, a lot more is required than when you just take pictures, beacause you know, you really need to express yourself through your every move. I learnt a lot from this shooting. But as I repeat, it definitely took a really really long time!(laughs)

Michika: What do you think of models who shift to acting, like Cameron Diaz? I watch a lot of movies, and I feel that the two (models and actresses) are alike in some ways, but totally different at the same time. Actresses on screen have a stronger aura than models. (hey that`s kinda rude!) Are you thinking of becoming an actress?

Daria: I`m attracted to directing films rather than being in one. Of course, acting is very interesting, and the more you act, the more you have fun doing it. I realized how wonderful acting is through a short film for Prada, and I also am eager to do more. But actually making the film, is what I wish to do. Right now, I`m working on a short movie as a producer in Vancouver. I`m hoping to study both the front (acting) and the back(producing and directing) sides of making a movie. It`s amazing when you get to express what`s inside your mind in a film. The same thing goes for acting too. Acting is a beautiful way of expressing your inner self, and it`s a special talent that certain people have by nature. Let`s hope I have that talent too (laughs). Either way, I would definitely like to be involved in making movies.

Michika: Having studied art , I suppose it`s quite easy for you to have a clear image of what you want to make.

Daria: Well, yes, I can do that.

Michika: Does your image spread when you work with talented photographers?

Daria: I hope so. I`m often inspired by my fellow models and creative photographers. Especially Karl! I can`t even imagine what`s going inside his head because he`s so creative!
When I first started modeling, there were some tough times, being in a unique environment where you meet so many people with strong personalities. I kept asking myself:"Why am I modeling? I`m not that beautiful." You know, it`s really hard for a 14-year-old girl to handle all the things that happen in this industry. You don`t even fully understand yourself! But without undergoing those mental conflicts, I wouldn`t have been me.

Michika: Why do you think you`ve become so successful in the industry after you quit and then started again?

Daria: Because I matured! (laughs) By the time I came back to modeling, I wasn`t all that nervous, not that insecure like I used to be. What the people around me thought of me, I didn`t really care. During my year off, recharging my batteries, I grew to know who I am. That `s when I finally got to like myself. So when I tried out modeling for the second time, I was confident that though I may affect people around me, they won`t affect me that I would be someone else.

Michika: Being yourself is indeed important, yes. But you also had the luck too, didn`t you?

Daria: Maybe encountering Miuccia Prada was when everything started to work out. 3 years ago, I got to be in her show, also in her ads as well.

Michika: Oh, I LOVED that collection by Prada! With a bit of traditional feeling to it, it really was great on you.

Daria: Three years from that collection, do I still look good?

Michika: Of course! (laughs) By the way, do you use perfume in your daily life?

Daria: I do apply a little bit of scented oil. I used to use my mom`s when I was little...now my own. I love Hypnose, the perfume from Lancome. It`s feminine, but spicy at the same time. Don`t you think the bottle`s beautiful too? It`s shape was inspired by Japanese dresses, kimonoes.

Michika: Yes, indeed. I also heard that you use Lancome Juicy Tubes. I love them myself!

Daria: I`ve been using it for quite a long time---ever since I was in highschool. I would also recommend the new lipsticks, Color Fever. No.315 in particular. It`s very natural, and not artificial.

Michika: I think you look great with that natural makeup you have on right now since you have such a beautiful face. By the way, one lipstick can change one`s face dramatically.

Daria: Would you recognize me even if I put on a different lipstick?(laughs)

Michika: Yes I sure will, okay i won`t say it changes you THAT much. (laughs) Looking at you in person, you`re a natural beauty. I must say you`re extremely beautiful.

Daria: Thank you, but "beautiful" is only a subjective feeling. Talking about makeup, I love the fact that by applying makeup, you can feel like you`re someone else, with a different character.

Michika: Changing the subject, you seem to be the type that loves going outdoors.

Daria: That`s because I grew up in Canada, where you see and feel nature. Snowboarding and sailing are my favorites, and my dream is to sail all the way around the world. Excercising is a part of my life. It`s so important for your health. I`m thinking of starting t`ai chi, as a matter of fact.

Michika: Do you play sports on your days off?

Daria: Like you said, I love sports. Whenever I don`t have work, I spend my time out in nature-. I also go to art galleries or stay at home with my cat. When you live in the city where it`s always busy, you need to make sure you have some quiet time...balancing those two is very important.

Michika: Nowadays, young women seem to be obsessed with dressing or looking exactly like celebs...what do you feel about that, being one of those "celebs"?

Daria: The fashion industry is getting huge...and that makes some people think that models are ,in a way, like those hollywood stars. But in this industry, models appear and the next second, they disappear. They`re the center of attention for, say, 2 or 3 years and then, you forget them. You rarely get the chance to actually know what that model` s like, what they`re thinking...people try to be like one simply because they`re pretty. So I don`t think we`re those typical celebrities. Anyhow, I would look for something more than what you can see from the outside.

Michika: So, who is your rolemodel?

Daria: My mother and my grandmother. They have made me who I am today. My grandmother has led a hard life-she was forced to live in a concentration camp in Poland for ten years during WW2. My parents moved to Canada when me and my two siblings were still very young, and they raised us in a foreign land, where they didn`t know anybody. My mother still has three jobs! She`s a hardworking woman. I truly look up to her as well as my grandmother.

Michika: Is there any actor you adore?

Daria: Hmmm...(thinks for a while). I think Philip Seymour Hoffman is a great actor.

Michika: Daria, are you really 22 yrs old?? You`re so umm...mature!(laughs)

i definitely think i could fall in love with this girl. daria, call me! i want to be your next rolemodel!

anyway, thanks yuris, you did a great job, but it was worthy!
you see the difference when an interview is done by someone with some culture. of course, there's a piece they've to talk about lancome...
and of course i love the part where she's talking about being a director or a producer. i'm not surprised she said that, that's what all her previous interviews were leading. so, now we also know what movie she's producing, a short movie, as i was expecting. and no surprise she said that she felt ashamed to be a model.

anyway, now i'm expecting shana lucas' classical comment on me. :P

(well, maybe 'mature' wasn't the right term! ;) - and i love it she has a cat! she said that already though)
(btw, i didn't have time to reply yet)

there was a sort of self-portrait (at least i interpreted it like that) on sell at e-bay last year. the pic was posted here, but it's also seeable in other forums about her. you can see she has some technique, but i think she should work more on her style.

would you mind reposting it?

thx for the translation and the drawing, yuris!:flower:
i like this interview, it's one of those that Daria can truly express what she thinks intead of over-shadowed by promoting Lancome.^_^

(mc mullan)

young clean brave daria... :innocent:

Yes Emilia, how generous of you :D

pinkylam, are you sure the Lancome picture is not of Daria? There's another Lancome one, I think it's the most officially known one, where they seem to have completely erased her already very thin features. This pic looks like they could have done the opposite, I can't match this model with any of the other ones Lancome are using at the moment. Do you know the name of this model?
