Designer Bag First-timer

I am entering the market for a designer bag. Never having purchased one, does anyone know a good type to start with that will go with lots of outfits? I am not looking to buy cheap, but somewhere in the middle ground as far as price goes. Also, where can they be purchased via the internet.

Well, I'm not an expert but I would think Louis Vuitton goes with pretty much everything. Have you tried eluxury.com?

Gucci has great quality, but some of their best bags aren't really all that classic. Vuitton, also good quality and totally timeless, the LV logo never goes out of style. Bottega Venetta makes some gorgeous piseces but I believe they can get quite pricey. YSL also makes some nice bags.

Gucci has online shopping for bags but they don't offer the entire collection as they do in the stores, Neiman Marcus also has a good selection of designers but again, they don't have the entire selection of bags.

I would honestly go with a YSL mombasa ...as the proud owner of a few i can honestly say that they are amazing quality and the leather is beautiful and durable...a very good choice

I think a lot of people jump right to LV when they first start getting into designer bags, which can be the right decision, but there is no reason to avoid "trendier" pieces. Obvioulsy you should avoid it bags (event hough I feel like there has been a shortage of them lately), as well as anything that Dior makes (its like a car, the second you take it of the lot it drops in value completely--value in this case being "in"ness). I think the YSL Mombasa isn't a bad idea, but that, to me, isn't exactly a beginer piece. I think a Marc Jacobs Venetia would make an excelent first (its a good medium-large size, reasonably classic, and the quality is good). Also maybe the Celina Boogie bag in a classic color (black, tan, etc) would make a pretty good choice. Going back to LV, the Epi Speedy is actually a very very good option. The price isnt that bad (I think they go for like $695 in the new soft Epi), it is completely classic, and comes in a sh*t load of fun colors. Have fun shopping.

What's so bad about Dior? It has produced some amazing pieces like the saddle, D'trick, ballet, and the modernized Lady Dior. Anyway, if you are new to the designer bag market, I would suggest the Dior saddle( I personally like the leather ones better) or the medium size Balenciaga motorcycle bag. I think these are cool and edgy without being vulgar. Although LV is a classic, I don't think it's special enough to be a "designer" piece. MJ's venetia is also nice but be sure to pick a funcky color. Seafoam green, red, and white are some nice choices.

I say go for something young and fun (since this is your first bag, I'm guessing you're on the younger side) don't look for something that will last you a lifetime, but maybe five years or so without becoming dated or common.

I think that the balenciaga motorcycle bag is a good choice, so is a classic Dior saddlebag. But if what you are looking for is something to show people you bought something expensive and designer... go for LV or Fendi even.

I'd say stay away from the Prada nylon bags, gucci logo bags, dior logo bags... anything logo really.

I'd go for an Louis vuitton epi bag, like oceanharlot said i'd avoid logo'd bags, Lv epi leather is beautiful, hardwearing and absoloutly timeless, i think that i'd deffinately be a good start hope this helps.

The reason that I suggested that a new-commer to the designer bag market avoid Dior is because, whether or not this is important to you, most Dior bags date themselves very fast besides the classic logo bags and some of the leather ones. They are real fashion bags, not leather goods. The saddle bag in my opinion, is played out. After the craze when they first came out they have become a little bit of a joke here in New York, I still wear my baudrier occasionaly because it was never as common as the Saddle, but it is still a little passe. Just because Dior is still producing something, and because people are still buying it does not make it classic. If this doesn't bother someone, then more power to them, but personally I would think that if it is your first piece (and maybe your only designer bag for a while) you would want something that won't be completely over in a few months when Galliano decides that he going to push elephant trunk with pink PVC trim down the runway as the next IT bag.
