Designers fight having their clothes on the "wrong" celebs

thats really funny, though if she bought the clothes with her own money i think thats really nice, if they had given it to her for free i could understand. i saw her in topshop on wednesday and she didnt look too bad.

SOMEONE's turned up with more style than Kate Moss – at least, Liberty X singer Michelle Heaton thinks so. "I don't think Kate Moss is daring enough," Heaton said recently. "She always wears the same skinny jeans and gets stuck in a rut sometimes. Kate has style but I think Victoria Beckham is the best dressed."

vogue.com

this made me laugh! i don't see how VB can be the better dresses if she copy's all of kate moss's clothes>?

i don't think anyone is particularly hating on POSH...

posh spice is just one of the footballers wives talked about in the article and she is the best known because of her spice girl days...
i bet not one person in the US could name another one...
cause we don't care about football aka soccer...OR their wives and their tacky style...
so that is why people keep mentioning posh...:flower:

**in the US...we have our OWN tacky no talent celebs to hate on......

:ermm: *i think most people who know me on tfs know where i stand on the WHOLE celebrity phenomenon...it's shallow..i don't care..and don't think anyone should..

i really avoid all the celebrity threads on tfs..but i hope they can be discussed a little bit better in this one...

i LOVED the article, btw...i was just talking about one of my co-workers (stupid guy to be honest..) about the chloe paddington.
he said he LOOVED the bag because some celebrity like one of the olsen twins had it...
i said that it was a good bag until it got into the hands of the wrong people..i don't know what happened, but a couple of days later he was going on about how 'tired' the bag is, etc, etc...
*like the stuff because YOU like it! i think it's royally dumb to force yourself to act/dress like someone else..doesn't make sense to me at all:ermm:

i personaly dont like Victoria beckham, but designers have no right to who wears there clothes. This could be a load of rubbish at the end of the day.

I agree that designers can't choose who buy their clothes, especially since celebs like victoria beckham are the ones supporting the business. But at the same time, money isn't everything to some designers and certain celebs wearing certain items can eventually ruin the brand for number of reasons, for example, people may like the brand but won't buy it because a certain celeb they dislike is wearing it. I find interesting actually.........:innocent:

Designers put themselves in these positions they think the celeb helps but its quite the opposite I never buy because of a celeb its makes me dislike it if a bunch hop on it because they make it to mainstream ie Pharrell in LV ads,and Olsens Bagly Mishka,Richie for Jimmy Choo,Kidman at Chanel. An giving them free 10k dresses doesnt help the couture end of their business when Sally Sue an her American Eagle Outfitters clad flip flop wearing family are watching Oscars,Video Awards etc. The only ppl who look up to them are the ones who cant afford the stuff an usually go out an buy the knockoff from Canal St!!! I say Ban the Celeb an bring back the SuperModel!!

Well, WAGS payed for it fair and square so they will have to let them keep the items. If the WAGS were trying to mooch off the designers and get free stuff, then I would understand their distress.

Are you talking about that Dior Homme "The End" tee shirt? Talk about catastrophic.
Also, I think the designers might have the wrong idea about their target audience and design philosophy if gets picked-up by (what they consider) the wrong people. As the article said, Marc Jacobs, for example, isn't being "WAG-ed" because its aestetics is just too far from the taste of the 'wrong' people. You get what you deserve it seems?

Exactly ... I guess now designers are understanding the dangers of hooker chic? I wouldn't be caught dead in those Lanvin shoes.

This is why I rarely visit the celeb style threads...Though I agree with pastry, I like things because I like them but when I see celebrity that I dislike wearing things that I like, it irritates me.

Personally I don't think designers have any right to choose who wears their clothes. Anyone who wants to should be allowed to wear them.

My thoughts exactly.

How arrogant and snobbish, but isn't that what fashion is all about? :innocent:

If I was a designer, I'd get REALLY irritated to see my work worn by the 'wrong' people, regardless whether they paid the money or not.

i think this reasoning is utterly stupid... people like the WAGs are the bulk of customers for major brands like vuitton, burberry and chanel... i mean, how do they expect to keep financial growth if they deem to alienate customers like that? certainly giving away free stuff to moss & co. won't help

and besides, a 'trend' certainly has no other destiny but to crash and burn...

this reminds me of a little scandal from one year ago when karl got freaked out about H&M making his clothes in bigger sizes. I just think it's so hypocritical, more than that, it's dumb. fashion is a BUSINESS. the more it sells, the better. Snooty designers can think all their want, i guess they just have this ideal picture in mind while desiginiing of what their costumer looks like. Well, i think they should let go of this illusion - a lot of people with money will buy their items solely because they have seen it in magazines. and how do they get there? through beckham, madonna, sienna etc. it's just life. if they want to sell they shouldn't angry those people no matter how uncool they are. Take the case of balenciaga, 10 years ago very few people knew and appreciated it. nowdays it's everywhere - mostly due to their bags but now solely. of course, being richies & nicky's and blah's favourite has given them more exposure while perhaps taking a little of their artsy exclusive reputation. But it's a choice - you either want to remain a small company with a handful of cool followers or expand at the expense of this image.

and we know who they are...:innocent:

anywoo...
it's a double edged sword...
but in the end designers need publicity...if someone is photographed with a bag, shoe, jacket, etc., that means the masses will see it and want it...

plus they send things to stylists to get a celebrity to wear it...
but you can't pick and chose who that celeb is...
and if a celeb goes out and buys it with their money, then the designer really can't say anything...

and like galleriaresident said, magazines are also part of the vicious cycle, putting celebs (both those worthy and those not) on the covers of magazines in certain designers...

i know after i see pics of a certain celeb in a piece from a collection i was thinking about buying, i think twice...like softie said...

actually..
i have had shoots where designers refuse to lend based on who the celeb is...
and others where people are falling over themselves based on who the celeb is....

*designers do actually pick and choose who they will lend to all the time...
sometimes you just have to lie to get stuff...cause no one wants to dress certain celebs/pseudo clelbs...
or you have to rent/borrow from a store, cause they don't care...

you do whatcha gotta do......

I remember reading about a special that Diesel (i think) had once on a particular t shirt because this celebrity (from the group STEPS i think) was photographed wearing it... their advertisment was something like "we apologise for this (picture of the star wearing the tshirt) This tshirt is now reduced to $10"
a rather mean, but amusing way to clear stock!

I remember Matthew Williamson being upset that Britney Spears was wearing his stuff, and Proenza Schouler not liking one of the Olsens wearing one of their tops.
