hi guys. i read earlier in this thread that nicolas ghesquière was pronounced ges-key-ae, or ges-care.
it is actually jess-care. coming from the mouth of harold koda, the costume institute's chief curator. 'nuff said!

I think it's Guess-key-air. (That's what a foreign exchange student said, but she had a heavy Swiss accent, so it might be different.)

In today's ModTV podcast, and everyone was pronouncing Lanvin differently. Which is the correct way?

This may seem stupid, but how do you pronounce Jil Sander? Is is like Sander (as in sand) or more of a soft, stretched out a, like Saander (like samantha). Ok, sorry if the examples make no sense. I am horrible at typing pronunciations!

yeah your examples make sense. Charlie Porter pronounces it Sa-on-ders but he's English and they usually stretch the "a" sound. in a German perfume commercial for Jil Sander, the narrator pronounced it with a more nasal "A" so it would be like how an American says Sanders, as in sand, band, stand, etc. so i believe it's the latter, since Jil Sanders is German

cool, thanks for the insight, carioca! I have a fear of americanizing things, so I tend to stretch the "a", but it's nice to know the german way of saying it!

I don't think there is a trick to this one. Basically how you would pronounce the first part of "Miuccia".

on fashion tv, the narrator pronounced Ghesquire like jess-key-air that's how i usually say it.

^yeah that's the right pronunciation, Pamela Golbin of Balenciaga Paris pronounced it jess-key-air, but the ending "ere" is a bit shorter (sort of like french people saying the english word "air" but with their accent.)
i've also heard Ghesquière pronounced liked guess-key-air/er, without a J pronunciation and the "ere" as a shorter sound, but i believe it's wrong.
